Vpn Problem

Gents,

I've installed Routing & Remote Access Role and all the other bits inc Network Policy Server.

I am using an XP servcie PK3 Laptop with a Vodaphone Mobile Connect Internet connection to test dialing into my Server 2008 R2 which is on Virmin Business Account.

When I dial up on XP machine to use VPN, it connects fine. I can ping all the machine's IP addresses located on my server 2008 LAN network. If i try and access any of the remote network folders such as typing in \\Sever\c or even just \\Server (server is name of my 2008 R2 machine) then I get bloddy long pause and eventually an error window saying the 'specified network name is no longer available' or sometimes 'specified network path could not be found'

I don't understand why I cant access any folders located on my server. I made sure that the drives are shared with the right permissions. I tested this by plugging my xp machine directly into the local LAN switch, (ie not using VPN diall up) I can then type in \\Server in the and it wiill bring up the window showing all my shared drives/folders on the server machine ok.

I also tried this problem with using both either a custom Network Policy using the wizard, the default Routing & Remote Access Policy and also with the Network Policy Server diabled, still no differernce so i dont think it is an NPS issue.

My XP machine is added to computers in Active Directory and the fact that when I dial in VPN and connect i use my administartor credentials which seems to work fine.

One last thing to add was yeaterday before I had added my Laptop to the computers list in Acitve Directory, I was trying the VPN and found that when trying to access \\Server then I would get the log in window come up, i would put in my username and password and then it would spit back the message that i didn't have the permissions to access the folder. I realised that although I had established a VPN at this point, i was still unable to gain access to the network cause my server did not recognize the Laptop as an authorised member of the computers group. This is why I then added the Laptop to this group in Active Directory. Since then as mentioned above I no longer get a log in window when I try and access the remote drives, I just get the message saying 'specified network name is no longer available'

Mhhhh let me know your ping delay... I think your problem could be the network speed.

Open your VPN and once connected type to the command prompt (XP client): ping -t ServerIP >C:\PingOut.txt then TRY to open the network path \\Server\resource... once your get the error message return to your prompt and type CTRL+C.

Now come back here and upload the file just created (C:\PingOut.txt).
