Fax Server

We have a Windows 2008 Fax Server dedicated strictly for Inbound faxes. We have 4 Faxmodems connected to this server. Other notes: This server also serves as a print server and hosts nearly 2 dozen printers. I am new to the company and am working a continual problem the company is facing. Many of their customers are complaining that when they fax they get continual busy signals. However, when we look at the fax logs, we always see no less than one of the fax modems open...so, we should not be experiencing busy signals. It is not isolated to a specific fax modem....the free modem can be any of the four we have.

I am not familiar with Fax Servers so I'm looking for some advice on how to troubleshoot this. My guess is that the Print Server role may be causing issues. Additionally, this same server host other applications....in fact, there are many other applications that concern me....I'm thinking the fax server probably should be isolated on its own server..........especially, since thre has been issues with the print server role.

We have both Fax server (2k3) and print server (x64 - 2k8).

We have more or less 50 printers, 1 modem and 1 fax.

The problem with printers are drivers. Unlucky, many drivers are universals (Thanks HP and Brother...) which is a good thing BUT sometime the spooler may have trouble managing all the stuffs.

Now, a good thing which helped me to resolve my problem (slow printers) was to move the spooler on another partition and add an exception to the antivirus.


To be honest, fax server works fine if you don't have many faxes. I mean, you can't really manage faxes. The best thing should be buy a specific software. Anyway, Windows doesn't do any "load balancing" with modems and this can give you a busy line.
