ok hi,

im wanting to setup a role in server 2008 to offer virtual desktops,

a users starts up their computer, and logs in and the desktop settings, layout etc and everything is stored on the server and displays their settings from the server, if you know what i mean.

is this Windows Deployment Services?

Thanks!

Hi,

No, WDS (Win Deployment Services) is the role which helps you to DEPLOY OSs via PXE (network boot).

What you want is called Remote Desktop Service.

Clients start up, open a connection on a remote desktop server and they will have their desktop and so on...

but dont they have initiate a connection each time manually,

i thought that they logon and it directly loads thier desktop

eg. \\SERVER\USERNAME

and that would log them onto the server and load the profiles for that user?
is that remote desktop services?

thank you

mhhh wait, don't confuse profile with desktop.

You can REDIRECT a profile to a server (this can be done via AD user's properties or via GP).
You can REDIRECT the DESKTOP (or documents, images, ...) folder on a server (or network path) via GP.

You can CREATE a remote desktop server where people can connect to and all the settings are loaded. Actually is almost the same for your case...

WDS is something else which doesn't apply here :)

ok cool, so install remote desktop services.

just noticed i need hyper-v installed for this. im running a 32bit version of server 2008 on a P4, do you think i will be able to enable hyper-v?

thanks

Wait... no hyper-v required.

With RDP enabled, people will RDP to your server and they will use THE RESOURCES OF THAT SERVER!

Hyper-v is to CREATE another computer... not RDP.
