Hello,

Problem : We have a Windows Server (our Live Intranet server) with Windows 2008 Server Standard SP2 ,64 bit OS.IIS 7.0 running on it. When we download a PDF file (75 MB) from our Intranet Server it takes almost 2 minutes to download which is too long. When we download the files it is simply an http request(we open IE, go to //intranet, click on the file which is an http link and it gives an option of saving the file)We have tried resetting the IIS in order to rule out any server cache related problem. Also, we have checked the bandwidth allowed on the IIS and it is set to maximum as well as the concurrent connections allowed are set to maximum. Any idea why downloading files is taking so long?? i mean it should not take 2 minutes to download a file 75 MB from our intranet. The slowness is with all the files. Note :This server is connected to the Core switch and we have checked. The Giga port to which this server is connected does not have any errors or anything. The NIC card on the server is operating at 1 Gbps as well.

By the way, even when i go physically to the server (logging to the server) where the file is residing ( root drive)and open a browser (IE),open Intranet and then download the same file (75 MB) it stilll takes 2 minutes! So its not even going thru any firewall.

could this slowness be caused by some setting on windows 2008 server?? maybe this is OS related.

please advise.

Thanks.

Hi,

Try the following solution:

Select a period when the server is not really under load (usually midday or evening), then open PERFORMANCE MONITOR and finally try to download the file and check all the percentages (especially network).

From there you should see if there's any congestion.

Also try a download speed from that server:
http://www.tracert.org/bandwidth_meter/speedtest.php

Is it a good speed or not?

Thanks for the reply.

I will try the solution above. But i did not under what you meant by "Is it a good speed or not?".
The Intranet Server is on the LAN..connected to our Core Switch(Giga ports) and the NIC card on the server is operating at 1Gbps as well.

The speed test is FROM your server TO internet.

The first test (with performance monitor) is to check if there's any congestion or other. The second test (internet test) is to understand if you have the same problem when you surf internet. Because if the problem is with the NIC itself, you should see the same issue, what I mean is that if you have an internet connection of 5 mb and after the test, your result is 2-3 mb, you should investigate further in order to "isolate" the problem. If the result is good, we can exclude something :)
