Hi guys, I came across this site during random searching for answers, and was wondering if some of you guys could offer some assistance. I come from a helpdesk background and never really played with servers at all except for very basic administration.
I have this project to set up a new Domain Controller, and install an SMTP server on there.

I have managed to get the server installed, installed ADDS, DNS server, and an SMTP server through IIS 6, which is up and running fine. I can also telnet to the server though port 25.

my problem lies here, It is required of me to be able to send a test email, I think via Telnet from a specific address, not related to the domain. (ie my domain is xyz.local, this email has to come from someone@someaddress.com)

There lies my problem, im a bit lost as what to do next, its probably simple as I think i have done the hard parts....just not sure which direction to go next

I am aware of the commands i need to use in Telnet, EHLO, MAIL FROM, RCPT TO etc, the emails i send just seem to hang in the queue then time out

Any advise it appreciated, thanks alot guys

Yea thats the stuff, I actually used that page as a resource, thing is the mail just times out, actualy says queued for sending in Telnet, and Im not sure why, maybe there is some key settings in IIS6 im missing, I had to use guides from the net to get me this far, as you can probably tell Im out of my depth lol

Ok, I am going about this a little different, just to try and get it working. I now think I have an adress, as in I set it up in AD, user@onlinetest.local, now i want to send it to my gmail account to test it (am running it virtually at the moment) now I get a message of unable to relay that address...sugestions?

OK, set two users up, still getting that relaying error, from what ive seen your supposed to set the relay to 127.0.0.1 correct?

Ok, getting somewhere now, managed to enter both of the new account adresses, however now I am back to the queueing problem....

I really appreciate your advice here by the way
