Hello All,

I am new to working with a server and I have a quick question. I ordered a new server and it arrived and I installed the AD DS and DNS Server, as well as the DHCP role. My question is I can't seem to get the configuration right without getting the Red X showing that the DNS and DHCP roles are not working.

My main question is we are using a Netgear Router that I have turned off the DHCP service and set a static IP on the server, but it still doesn't appear to work, can I use that router or should I just use a switch instead? Furthermore, when restart a client computer and try to connect it to the domain, it says that it can't find the domain controller, when I check the connection status the IP address is a random one that is not in the scope (for example if the scope is 192.168.0.100 - 192.168.0.200, the ip that shows up is something like a 169.xxx.x.x) I am not sure why it will not take an ip address that is in the scope? And I did set the Primary DNS Server up as the server's IP address so from what I have read, I am not sure where the problem lies.

Any insight is greatly appreciated!!

In cmd if you run ipconfig your not getting the IP address that you set on the interface? Are you sure the static IP you're assigning on the server is valid for your network?

Hello Koga,

No the server is showing the proper IP address (192.168.x.x) but if I start up a client machine, it will give me limited connectivity or no connection and give me a random IP address such as (169.xxx.x.x) which is not in my scope and I am not sure where it is getting that IP from. I wasn't sure if still using a router is causing any issues?

Are you trying to use your server to lease DHCP? Your client computers aren't getting an IP because you disabled DHCP on your router that would normally lease IPs and you haven't specified a static IP for your clients. It seems to me that you would want to enable DHCP on your router to lease IPs to wireless clients and keep the server on a static IP. If you want to use Active Directory on your Domain Controller with your clients then set the clients Primary DNS to the IP of your server.
