Hi all,

i had to recreate my hard drive because of a bad partition, and since
then i have not been able to boot my system without the erd diskette in
the a: drive.

without it i get the error message 'windows 2000 could not start,
ntoskrnl.exe missing or corrupted..'

i have tried everything in the MS support faq's and have replaced my
ntoskrnl.exe and hal.dll, and have checked my boot.ini with no success.
i have also run all of the options in the rescue routines and the sfc
/scan command. i've had this problem in the past and corrected it with
either fixmbr and/or fixboot in the rescue mode, but not this time.

my system has an ata 80 gig c drive and a sata 200 gig drive with the 80
gig as drive f: and the 200 partitioned as c: d: and e:. i have put the
boot.ini on both drives just in case, and checked every boot.ini on the
system, and even copied the files from the erd disk to the c: and f:
drives with no success.

if anyone can tell me what else to try it would be greatly appreciated...

Details of exactly what took place here may help.

thanx for your reply - installing a new partition (linux) flagged the
entire drive as bad and i had to reformat the entire drive and restore
my win2000 partition after which the problems began...

Re: W2k boot problem

Sounds like there is no longer a primary partition. You can verify with a
win98 startup disk, then run fdisk to see what you've got.

hi dave,

i tried this and also tried replacing the mbr several times but no luck
- the system should boot on my 2nd sata drive but i'm sure it's trying
to boot from my 1st drive...

i have checked the bios setup and the 2nd drive is in the 1st boot position.

thanks, rob

*** You'll need to get to the bottom of this (hardware/configuration
problem)

*** Is the a primary active partition present?
