Are there any TS CALs that come with Windows Server 2003?

I'm looking to add 5 CALs to my TS and when I go into the TS Licensing
utility, I see my DC (which is the only TS server in my environment) and
it reads

Product: Existing Windows 2000 Server - Terminal Services CAL Token (per
device)

Type: Built-in

Total: Unlimited

Available: Unlimited

Issued: 0

So, what does this mean? I have unlimited TS CALs? (I don't think so.) Is
there a number of CALs that come with Windows Server? I don't want to
purchase TS CALs that I don't need.

Right now we are using Remote Desktop for Administration, which allows
just two concurrent connections. Do I need to uninstall that before
bringing up TS? How does the OS differentiate between RDC for Admin and a
TS session? Two entirely different animals?

Thanks,
JM

[Ratnesh] These are Temporary CAL's. These CAL's allow users to connect to
TS until TS grace period expires.
You are required to purchase CAL's for accessing the server.

For more info
TSLS CAL's please check

Terminal Server License Server you can check,

[Ratnesh] Well When you said Uninstalling, I am assuming you mean
uninstalling "Remote Desktop".
In that case answer is NO, you just need to install Terminal Server (TS) and
you are good to go.

For installing TS you can check following link

I'm a bit confused.. ;-) The subject says "Server 2003" but you talk
about "2000 Server" in the body.

Windows 2000 server provided free licenses to clients with Windows 200
or XP as the OS.

Windows 2003 requires a user or device license regardless of the OS
installed.

Hank,

It is "Existing Windows 2000 Server - Terminal Services CAL Token (per
device)" like I said. But this is on a Windows 2003 Server. I'm guessing
that they did an in-place upgrade of this server from 2000 to 2003 at some
point. I'm new to this company and some stuff was done prior to my being
here that was not tracked effectively. :(

Re: Are there any TS CALs that come with Windows Server 2003?

No, it's not caused by an upgrade.
Every Windows 2003 TS Licensing Server contains the "Existing
Windows 2000 Server - Terminal Services CAL Token (per device)"
pool of free TS CALs, simply because a 2003 TS LS can serve as a TS
LS for both W2K and 2003 Terminal Servers. It's backwards
compatible.

BUT: these licenses are only used when a W2K pro or XP Pro client
connects to a W2K TS. So if your TS runs 2003, you cannot use these
licenses.

That's not correct, Ratnesh.
The "Existing Windows 2000 Server - Terminal Services CAL Token (per
device)" pool of free TS CALs is present on every 2003 TS Licensing
Server, because a 2003 TS LS can serve as a TS LS for both W2K and
2003 Terminal Servers.

These licenses are permanent licenses, which are issued for free to
W2K Pro or XP Pro client, *when they connect to a W2K TS*.

When clients connect to a 2003 TS and there are no permanent licenses
in the TS Licensing Server, a "Temporary 2003 Per Device TS CAL" is
issued.

Re: Are there any TS CALs that come with Windows Server 2003?

I'm jumping in on some else's thread here, but I believe it's relavent. I'm
in the middle of bringing up a new 2003 TS License Server to replace our 2000
TS License Server. Here are my questions:

1) Once this new 2003 server is activated as a License Server I can point
all my 2000 TS servers to it for licensing 2000 Pro and XP clients without
doing anything special to the installation? (Really I'm planning on using the
same IP address so the current TS servers will not need a change)

2) I have 500 TS Cals for 2000 TS that I'll need to move to this new server.
My understanding is I need to call the MS Clearing House to do this. Is that
correct?

3) Is there anything else I'm missing in the upgrade/migration?

Just for background, we're current using 2000 TS servers. I need the 2003
license server to handle both 2000 and 2003 TS License Requests as we start
to bring 2003 TS servers up.

Thanks,
James

Re: Are there any TS CALs that come with Windows Server 2003?

Hi James,

1. Yes
2. Yes
3. After the switchover, monitor the event logs of your TS
servers as well as the licensing server to make sure that
things are okay. You may want to test logging in from
machines that don't already have TS licenses just to see
that one is issued to them.

Please note that clients connecting to a 2003 TS server
will need a purchased 2003 TS CAL as well as a purchased
windows 2003 CAL.

Re: Are there any TS CALs that come with Windows Server 2003?

So if I have a Windows 2000 Pro OR a Vista Business machine that wants to
connect to TS on 2003 I know I need a TSCAL. I ALSO have to buy a regular
2003 server CAL? So I'm buying TWO CALs? I thought all I needed was a TSCAL.

Thanks,
James

Re: Are there any TS CALs that come with Windows Server 2003?

If you already own a 2003 windows CAL for each user/device
then you don't have to purchase it again. See here:
