I have been given a server to reformat and then reinstall as an XP
workstation. I have tried to unmount the disk and format, I have tried to
format in the disk section but it will not work - I have tried looking this
up but no info found any help gratfully recieved.

Use the stock-standard method: Boot the machine with your
WinXP CD, then follow the prompts. There is no need to
do any manual formatting - it's all part of the WinXP installation
process.

It is a Windows 2000 server and I have tried booting from XP but it will not
load or reformat.

Please explain exactly what you mean with "I have tried booting
from XP", i.e. the steps you took and the messages you saw on
the screen.

Re: Reformat an NTFS drive and change windows 2000 server to an XP
I have set the boot to boot from cd - the XP disc in. It runs through the
motions and then comes up with following:
Set up did not find any hard disk drives installed on your computer, the PC
reboots into Windows Server. I log in and go to disk management and the
format key is greyed out .

Re: Reformat an NTFS drive and change windows 2000 server to an XP
Re: Reformat an NTFS drive and change windows 2000 server to an XP
I booted from the XP CD and it went through but then came up with
"Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed on your computer"
The pc then reboots and goes into Windows Server.
I gave tried to boot from safe mode with dos then format but this does not
work.
I then go into disk managment and format is greyed out. It is a Windows 2000
server with an NTFS Partition I think. I want to delete/unistall Windows 2000
and turn this into a normal XP workstation but cannot format it any way I
have tried.

Re: Reformat an NTFS drive and change windows 2000 server to an XP
This was previously a server? What make/model? Hardware RAID with a disk
array controller card? What is happening is that setup cannot recognize the
drives because the disk array drivers are not part of the built in Windows
drivers. You need to hit F6 at the beginning of the setup and load the
drivers.
