How is the typical maintenance screen for web application look like? How to let user call back the existing record for editing?

There might be several way to do it, but which one is better? need your opinion.

Just a load of text boxes usually, you fine the record you want from a search or a browse, click on it, then the ASP can build a set of html text boxes (even radio if its a enum etc). Kinda like the usercp > options here..

I not very understand the search or browse, how the system do when I press the search button? can you explain more technical?
