I'm having the same issue,

I'm doing an upgrade install over xp sp2 and everything seemed to be
going fine up until, as was stated, the installer restarted my PC at
about 90%. The pc will now just go into a blue-screen restart cycle
with the exception

IRQL_LESS_OR_NOT_EQUAL (Normally I'd think memory, but the memtest tool
on the vista disk found no errors)

then it dumps memory and restarts again.

I've tried:
Removing all peripherals barring the necessities > same result

Booting to safemode to see if install can complete there > install
cannot complete in safemode.

Booting to last known good config > bluescreen again.

Running the repair tool from the Vista disk > "Searched for problems"
for 3 hrs, after which I stopped it.

Checking settings in bios to make sure no changes had been made >
problem arises here because the PC that i'm installing on has an older
bios in which I cannot check / change the gfx memory appature which
Yaronfr had success with. Normally i'd just update the bios to address
this but i'm thinking that updating now might !#$@ any possibility of
success.

Any advice would be appreciated - i'm currently planning on reverting
back to xp if it is still possible at this point. (EDIT) Apparently I
got far enough into the install that rolling back to xp isn't
available, nor can I boot xp :(

My specs:
AMD +4000
Asus A8N-E
ATI Radeon x1900xt
1GB Corsaire
SATA WD

Hi, Froby.

WHAT same issue? The message you quoted from says the poster was using "the
new Vista RC1", so it must have been from at least a year ago and at least a
couple of months before Vista RTM.

What version of Vista are you trying to install? 32-bit or 64-bit?

Have you seen all the reports from users who have tried to upgrade, as
opposed to doing a clean install? Upgrades are sometimes successful, but
often not. MANY upgraders, even after a successful upgrade, have elected
later to reformat and do a clean install after all.

A few weeks ago I had to do a repair install (also known as an in-place
upgrade) of my 8-month-old Vista Ultimate x64 after an unsuccessful update.
I was just "upgrading" from Vista to the same Vista. It took 5 hours to get
to the "upgraded" desktop to start the final tweaks. :>( The operation was
a success, but it took a lot longer than I expected.

You've given us no info as to the software you have installed on WinXP, but
your best course might be to back up your data, locate all the media to
install your applications, and choose to Custom Install Vista. Yes, you'll
need to reinstall your apps later, but total elapsed time might be less than
doing an upgrade, even a successful one. (How much time have you spent on
it so far?)
