I am well cheesed off today asking for a pay rise because the amount im on is a joke 13,000 gbp and got a fob off i think im gonna change my career.

Im based in the west midlands what should I exspect. Btw I do all the coding for a medium sized company with 200 advisors all using the software I write

A depressed Andy :(

What kind of code do you write? How old are you? What is your education level?

I always thought programmers in the private market earned a mint?

I left school with nothing, worked here for 20 odd years. Worked my way up from loading bay loader to now full time system developer. All self taught along with training stuff supplied by work......Oh and Im 39

Andy,

The IT job market should open up here in a year or five, and the grass will be greener on both sides again. :)

Until then, its worth looking for a new job in your spare time (*cough* perhaps while youre at work?) - but I wouldnt waste too much energy on it.

Well they just came back to me with a offer omg 500 increase what planet they on???

And they recon its a fair wage for doing all there coding web & app

Andy

Guess its going to depend on how long you have been with the company... cant expect too much within the first year, but after that you can start to earn more else where... I have found the key is moving company (companies arent too keen with dramatically hiking your pay up when they got away with paying you a low wage before.)

Unless they really dont want to loose you, lol.

I dont think that is anywhere near what they should be paying you, personally.

At that level of wage I could expect frequent raises of not less than 1000 as you show to them how good you are and work your way out of that area at the beginning of your first programming job.

I find it difficult to comprehend that as you have moved companies twice and you havent exceeded your current salary.

Well with seven years programming experience... you should at least be on over 16,000 depent on skill set, etc. What youve said I would expect you to be on about 20,000 time for a change of company.

??? but dudes Im on 24K and am not even in the private sector! I have been programming now for 14 yrs but only full time in the last 3-4 yrs.

Well with seven years programming experience... you should at least be on over 16,000 depent on skill set, etc.

this seems not of this world?

Well... if what theyre paying you isnt cutting it and you can make more working at the local Burger King, then just tell them what they need to pay you, otherwise give them a nice friendly "would you like fries with that?"

Seriously, if its not enough to live off of (or youre barely scraping by), then you should search for another job. But dont quit until you actually find one. ;)

If youve been programming such applications for 7 years I would expect at least 25k as a bare minimum.
