First print job of day ALWAYS hangs on server for a user

this is the weirdest problem i've ever seen. We have a user who's first
print job from her RDC session always hangs every day. Then when she logs
off the server and back on to clear her virtual print queue mapped to the
network printer installed on her local computer, she can then print. I've
tried deleting her profile from the server, reinstalling the printer on her
local computer, no such luck. Any ideas of what could I could possibly try
next???? She use mstsc to connect to the 2000 SP4 server. Even cancelling
the job in her virtual print queue doesn't work, it just sits at Deleting
forever until she logs off.

Re: First print job of day ALWAYS hangs on server for a user

Can you please provide a little more detail:
- When you say "First print job of day", what exactly do you mean? Did she
logged off when she left for the day or was the TS session left running? In
that case when she returned, the session must be locked or something.
- Is there any error in the event log?

To investigate the issue, I need to understand exactly when it happens.

Re: First print job of day ALWAYS hangs on server for a user

- I mean the first thing she prints every day when she opens her TS session
each morning. She does not leave it logged in overnight, she logs out when
she leaves every day, then establishes a new session every morning when she
returns.
- I cannot find any errors in any event log corresponding with the time she
sends the print job.

Its like the first print job of every calendar day just sits in the queue,
then if she logs out and back in she doesn't have any printing problems.

Hi,

Which printer make/model does she have?

Did the print driver for this printer ship on the Windows 2000
CD-ROM or did you load it separately? If not have you tried
mapping to a driver that did?

The document below has instructions on how to create a
mapping file.

Windows 2000 Terminal Services server logs events
1111, 1105, and 1106

Re: First print job of day ALWAYS hangs on server for a user

it's actually a networked Canon copier. There are other users who RDC to the
same server and who get the printer from the same print server on their local
computer that do not have this issue.

Re: First print job of day ALWAYS hangs on server for a user

Hello again,

Is the printer driver in use on the TS server certified by Canon
to be compatible with Terminal Services? Is it a WHQL certified
driver?

I asked you for the make/model so that I could look it up and
suggest a mapping for you to test.

It is possible that the printer driver has nothing to do with the
problems you are having. The thing is that problems caused by
TS incompatible drivers are *very* common. Symptoms can
vary wildly but here is a partial list: printing doesn't work, printing
works some of the time, printing works for admins but not users,
server blue screens, extra pages are printed, print output is incorrect,
server is slow, print spooler crashes, printing is slow, etc.

Have you tried having the problem user logoff of the TS, power off
their local PC, and then turn it back on and logon to the TS and
test printing? This is a pretty good simulation of a "first print job
of day" scenario.

Does the problem occur with *any* application that is the first to
try and print, or just one? What about if the first thing the user
attempts to print is a printer test page from the TS, same issue?

You mentioned you tried deleting her profile from the server.
Which profile are you referring to? Did you delete her *local*
PC profile, roaming profile for her PC, local profile on the TS
server, TS profile (if applicable), and roaming profile for her TS
session? If you are using roaming profiles they should *not* be
shared between the workstations and the TS server.

What if she logs on to a different PC with her account, connects
to the TS and tries to print at the start of the day, same problem?

Re: First print job of day ALWAYS hangs on server for a user

Not really sure if the driver is TS certified, not even sure how to tell to
be honest. It's a Canon ir3045.

I know the user has restarted her computer in between TS sessions, not sure
if she's actually powered down and back on. The application she is trying to
use most of the time is notepad. haven't tried the test page thing. haven't
tried the other PC thing yet.

the profile i deleted was the local profile on the terminal server.

looks like i got a lot of things to try, should take me about a week to get
through it all.
