Net Framework and how I fixed it

Hi everyone,

I know that many of you have been having terrible problems with updates of
the recent Net Framework. This is what I did (after remembering what I did
before when this occured---Oh yes it happened before) to fix the problem and
it worked nicely.

This worked on windows XP SP2 MCE (media center edition)

I uninstalled ALL Net Framework software on the computer. Now when you do
this, you may get error's upon rebooting after this uninstall due to some
software depending on Net Framework. I clicked ok on this error msg's and
they quite after a bit.

Then go to updates and update starting from Net Framework 3.0 then 2.0 and
then 1.0 and all associated patches and update to them in that order. It all
went well with no error's or update problems. I know, this is backwords but
this is the way it has to be done for some reason and this is the way I did
it before and so did everyone else I wrote to. Just make sure it is from 3.0
down to 1.0 and updates and patches in that order. Most will not have any
problem with doing this. It worked for me and I hope it works for everyone
else.

There is also a cleanup tool that can be used to make sure all of it is
uninstalled correctly and what the cleanup tool does not do, go to your
normal uninstall in the control panel and use that.

Hi PrairieSpirit.The problem is in the "Hotfix update" for the .NET 1.1
framework.
All you have to do to rectify problem is to remove all .NET 1.1 framework
items in the add/remove programme section.Once the .NET framework 1.1 has
uninstalled it automatically removes the hotfix that appears to have been
causing the problem.Restart computer and then go back to windows update and
reinstall : .Net framework 1.1 ,service pack 1.1 update for framework 1.1 and
then then update KB928366 should install without a problem . cheers Scotty.

Hi Scott,

I did that and tried what you suggest below and it did not work for me. So
that is why I uninstalled all Net Framework and reinstalled starting with Net
Framework 3.0 back to 1.0 with all hot fixes. Why it did not work, I have no
idea, but I did try what you suggest. Being that it is Windows XP SP2 MCE
could be the difference, as I have found Media Center Edition is not all the
cooperative with many things and if I had my way, I would not have MCE at all.

What I get is that it is installing then failed .. I can't even uninstall it
I keep getting error messages like SL32.tmp is causing the problem

What I would do in this case and go and get the cleanup tool mentioned above
in other note and see if that helps. I would also check out SL32.tmp and see
what it is. The cleanup tool should work and it is quite good at what it
does. If all else fails, contact Microsoft and I hope all turns out alright
for you.

Next computer I get is going to be a MAC for I am more than sick of
Microsoft problems now. No matter how good Microsoft claims to be, still
things do not work correctly. Nice words to please the ears I guess is all
you get from Microsoft lately.

Yes I remember having to go through all of this too in the past, but all I
uninstalled that time was just version 2 then reinstalled it and it worked
fine.

My question is, why do we need version 1 if you have version 2. Now I see
there is a version 3, do we need versions 1 and 2?

Are the newer versions just add ons for version 1 so that you would need to
just keep the old versions and download the newer ones too in order for
everything to work?

No probs Ivan: Just trying to save you time and energy from uninstalling all
the 3 frameworks.As long as you got there in the end.Am just reading that
some people can't even uninstall the .NET frameworks from their
computers.It's beyond me now.Im only an advanced novice!!... cheers anyway

My understanding of the .NET Framework family...

1.1 is patches to 1.0. So those two merge.
2.0 did not replace 1.1 - some apps you may run into may still utilize 1.1.
3.0 is 2.0+more. SO if you have 3.0, you can do all the 2.0 stuff and 3.0
stuff.

Someone might correct me - but I am pretty sure that is the way of things
right now.

When I go in and try to remove by way of Control Panel it tells me that the
..Net is on a removable disc therefore it cannot find the path and keeps
asking me to install the disc. What do I do from here?? The Hotfix does the
same thing when I try and remove it.

This question has been asked before and no one seems to get a answer, so I am
assuming that they are dependent on each other for some reason. Common sense
would dictate to me that only one would be enough, but it seems to be not so.
Perhaps Microsoft can explain this to us and why we need all three.

Yes I too am and have been readint that some cannot even uninstall without
error'r or difficulty. It makes one wonder if this is all worth it. There
are other operating systems (perhaps not as easy to install) that are just as
effective without all the problems. I am in hopes that sometime durring this
century perhaps Microsoft can make a OS without all the updates and
difficulties it now has. Even Vista I read in many areas is somewhat a mess
and hard to work with, go figure.

This Net Framework (update) from what I am reading is a very difficult one
and many are having some nasty problems. It would seem to me that if this is
not working well or correctly Microsoft would do something about it and get
right on the problem. But they take you through page after page of words and
difficult proceedures that take time and in many cases things still do not
work right for some. I myself, have grown very tired of a OS that constantly
does not work correctly and so, next time I go to Mac. I am a computer
technician myself and have been for 15 years and it seems it is always
something with the Microsoft OS and products.

Hi.

While that might work just fine, I found a simpler (imho) solution.
I just ran dotnetfx.exe and chose "Repair".
After that I could install the update without problems.

Hope this helps somebody.

this does not work for me as when trying to uninstall, computer responds with
error that can only uninstall software that is installed... apparently, even
though 1.1 is listed in my control panel, my computer believes it is not
installed

Re: Net Framework and how I fixed it

I'm one of those that can't even uninstall .Net framework 1.1 and .Net
framework 2.0 from Add/Remove programs. I tried removing 1.1 using the
Windows Install Cleanup utility, it was removed from the list using the
cleanup tool but 1.1 is still listed in Add/Remove programs. I then try to
remove 1.1 again from Add/Remove programs and now I get a message " This
action is only valid for products that are currently installed."

My understanding of the .NET Framework family...

1.1 is patches to 1.0. So those two merge.
2.0 did not replace 1.1 - some apps you may run into may still utilize 1.1.
3.0 is 2.0+more. SO if you have 3.0, you can do all the 2.0 stuff and 3.0
stuff.

Someone might correct me - but I am pretty sure that is the way of things
right now.

I went ahead and did what I did the last time and it worked.

What I did was uninstall .Net Framework, version 2.0 from add/remove
programs, restarted and then reinstalled .Net Framework, version 2.0 found
below.

After I downloaded it again I went to updates and installed the new update
and it was fine.

Hope it works for someone else too.

Thanks to everyone for different suggestions. It seems what works for one

So there are lots of ways to attack the problem, but no guarantees which one
will (do the most collateral damage) or (be the least invasive) or (try in a
certain order of "try this, if that don't work, go to this"). I've been a PC
user for almost 20 years, but this might be the straw - MicroSoft's attitude
about it really stinks too. Oh well, Uninstall Reinstall here we go.
