Set up for different privilege

I have table which stores different users name and password and the different privilege to the difference function in the application. Once the end user login, I willl check the table and enable and disable the button accordingly. In the VB, I use public varible to control the access. Are there difference approach for that ? I think I suppose to use class. Will you some one email me some example. I do not get used to the class.
