Contrast vrs. brightness

Is there any convenient way of checking the contrast of a bitmap? Im trying to write a program that analyzes a greyscale bitmap, find areas of very similar brightness, and changes their brightness levels so that they are farther apart, thereby making it easier to see them - in otherwords. In other words, I want to increase the contrast of the bitmap
