writing images to an rtf file

I need to replace a text marker {{picture}} in a rtf template with the required image. I cant find any reference anywhere to writing rtfs with images in them.

I assume I could read the template in as a string, change the text markers using replace for the textual content and then write the results to an rtf, but getting an image into an rtf document is really making me struggle.

any help would be really appreciated.
