How about a "Coding Challenge"?

They have them on the extreme vb boards, heck, they just got their own forum!

I liked those, but I was starting to learn vb.net at the time and my spare programming hours is in .net mode.

Id love to see a .net programming challenge.

Heck, I think we have more to offer, you can see how vb.net stacks up against C# and C++.Net for the same challenges.

Its a good idea, unfortunately it means someone has to do all the work of coming up with one!

I dont see what would be so hard, so long as theres interest. You just have to get the ball rolling and make sure people are aware.

in the Extreme VB6 boards they just got their own forum for it. Id think that would make it really easy and stand out. Otherwise just make a post under Announcements maybe?

Those that make submissions could also make suggestions for future challenges. Just make a sticky post for the uploaded projects.

I miss that. I got into some on the other boards, but Ive been learning .net like crazy, I dont want to reset any of my habits right now and start doing projects in vb6 again.

I think the challenge should relate to something that we dont see very often, like Web Services for example. That way more interest can be drawn into the subject, and also perhaps allow those participating to learn something that they didnt know before.

Since I brought up Web Services, how about a challenge that has to do with something called Pattern Matching. Not only do you have to create the WSDL file yourself, but you also need a good knowledge of Regular Expressions (a minor challenge in itself).

Heres an example of what Im talking about;

Edit: The sample doesnt seem to work, but the source gives a good idea as to whats involved with creating a Pattern Matching Web Service.

How you can turn this into a challenge.. I have no idea. Perhaps have people program a Pattern Matching Web Service for this site, or better yet, for vBulletin Boards in general (something that would be useful when its done) that returns all posts made for "today" on the specified vBulletin Board.

Anyway, just a thought.

The problem is the lack of badged members to support the challenges at this point. This forum is still very new, compared to EXVBF, and because of that we dont have nearly as many badged members here. I cant say for sure, obviously, but I tend to think that there would me more limited interest from our regular members to take part in the challenges over here. There are far more members on the other forum and there were still only about a dozen people taking part in the challenges.

What do you mean by badged members, and why would they be important to the challenge?

However, I agree that there wouldnt be much interest. :P

Badged meaning blue-ies, green-ies, red-ies, etc. The leaders, experts, admins and what-not. I think the concern is that badges would be the ones coming up with the idea, setting the rules, judging, etc. and theres not a lot of time for most of us.

I, too, agree that challenges are fun and have the potential to bring in lots of users. I havent seen those types of numbers in the past even when prizes are offered but Id be up for a challenge if we can get a good idea hashed out. :)
