Excellent that everything went smoothly. So, since were on UNIX again and no longer need to switch to ASP.NET, will we be moving to vBulletin 3.0.0?
 
I *never* want to see a pop up. If the new host wants to throw up a non-intrusive banner (a SINGLE banner) at the top of the page, thats fine. I can understand the need for some support and minor cash flow. But pop ups, flash ads, video ads, ads with sound, etc, etc, etc is something I certainly dont want to see.
 
You wont see them either. All the other communities that they acquired remained the same. They might add their header with links to their other sites and will add their own banners, but everything will remain the same.
 
Not to mention that IE is the only browser still to force popup ads.
 
Theres a plethora of popup blockers available. I fail to see what impact it would have.

There are also plenty of other .NET forums I could visit as well. So I guess youre right, it wouldnt have any impact on me at all.
 
Just goes to show what I know? I was under the impression this site was run by some dudes out there who just liked running a forum? Never dreamt it was a business:)
 
Too bad the only way to get it is to be on the Windows Longhorn beta team. ;)
 
Last week I installed the Google Bar at work, it blocks popups and remembers which site you clicked on Block or Allow. So far it seems to work well.
 
Im sure the reason that company bought this website was because of the vast majority of users. Of course, it goes without saying that they bought a large database of said users information, including email addresses and website addresses.

Will there be notification by this new owner if they decide to use that information for marketing purposes? Running the forum and being a moderator is one thing, but can you really be sure that they arent sifting through the database on their servers behind your back?
 
Ok, I read their "privacy policy" and it only half answered my question. There wont be any notification if they decide to use everyones email address. Also, the policy says "The Company collects, stores and uses data collected from you in accordance with the Companys Privacy Policy." Unfortunately, the privacy policy doesnt mentiond what kind of data it stores or how it uses it. However, it does say that if you post anything to any of their websites that you grant them full copyright and exploitative ownership. It kind of sucks for a programming website where people inadvertently post bits and portions of thier code. IP issues are a sincere concern for programmers.
 
Might want to drop an email to them and ask them to explain it. The privacy policy that is up here doesnt contain anything about granting full copyrights to anything you post.
I can agree that a programming site where code is posted shouldnt have such a statement in the privacy statement.
In the footer I used to have a statement that all posts are property of the respective poster and could only be used with permission. Somewhere along the way working on the site templates it was removed. Being that it was at the bottom of each page I never missed it not being there.

Mozilla Firebird has an excellent pop-up blocker, tabbed browsing and a bunch of other cool stuff... and you dont need to be a part of the Longhorn beta team... oh and even better... its free.
