Hi,
I've been struggling with an issue for a while, so I was wondering if anyone
had any input. Running a Dell Poweredge with W2K3 SP2, all of the latest
patches.
We take shadow copies hourly, Mon-Fri 9-5PM. Shadow copies will work for 5
or so days - and I will check on them at my XP client (where the client is
installed). For some reason, after I check on them with the client, the
next time I go view to make sure it is still backing up, the shadow copies
client will not show any new shadow copies have been created. For example at
10:05AM I will check the previous versions client, and see an 10AM entry, and
information is available. At 11:10AM, I will check again and I will NOT see
a 11AM shadow copy backup, only 10AM and prior. If I look on the server
directly at the Shadow copies interface on the server off of the partition, I
WILL see the 11AM backup. In looking thru the event logs, there are no
errors and it shows that the backups are being created successfully. But
just for some reason my client can't see the new backups created after I
checked the first time. This has now happened to me 2x in a row over a 2
week period of time where I check one hour, it's fine - come back the next
hour to check again (or actually restore a file...) and it's not available
thru the client piece but it is available if I look on the server. I've
checked from multiple desktops on the network, so it's not something just
isolated to me.
Just to throw another wrench in the works here - one other thing I've
noticed is that RDP is somehow affected here. I cannot RDP to the server
after I have one missing shadow copy from the client. In the previous
example - At 10AM I check my previous versions client, all is good; I RDP to
the machine with no problem. 11Am rolls around, I dont have an 11AM backup,
AND, I can't RDP to the machine. If I go on the server directly, and delete
all of the shadow copy versions on the disk - RDP magically starts working
again.
I've reformatted the disk that the shadow copies exist on - I've updated my
shadow copy client with KB903234; I've disabled and enabled the VSS multiple
times.
Thoughts, suggestions?
Thanks!
Linda
