I am currently in the MIS program at university i am just wondering if anyone could suggest the worth of this degree when looking for work in IT . I do take * almost * all of the programming courses that CS students take including data structures , computer architecture , c++ courses , file management , a software engineering course , database management .. . Anyways if anyone has suggestions it is welcome.
thank you

If you take all of the same core classes, then why not just get the CS degree? If you really want your degree to be worth something, then get a BA in Engineering and a minor in Math.

BTW what is MIS? Ive heard of CIS (Computer Information Systems), but not MIS.

MIS is Management Information Systems.
Im pretty sure that the programming courses offered in MIS are light compared with ones offered in the CS degree.

The university i go to , in canada if it makes a difference , offers mis with all the same programming courses as cs except for 3 , the difference is mis contains many more business/accounting courses while cs student take more maths and sciences. I didnt take cs because in canada its not really in demand , neither is mis really right now but i wanted a bussiness/accounting background to fall back on. i just wanted to know if anyone had any good advice concerning this degree , and if anyone has the degree it would be great to get first hand feedback from them.

Well, if you want to be a programmer then you definitely need to get a CS degree. If business is your thing, then CIS or MIS would probably do okay. Id still get a minor in CS and Math though, just in case.

I disagree that you NEED a CS degree. I left school at 16 therefore have no Degree or any form of higher education...never stopped me !!!

My view is Higher Education will help you to get started, although is not essential, but it really comes down to your own ability and application for the job. Besides, I have found that a CS degree is no guarantee that someone is any good.

I believe MIS is just a Bachelor in Commerce with an MIS major, correct me Im wrong. Its good if you want a job as a business/systems analyst, wouldnt recommend it if you want to be a programmer. For a programmer I would recommend a CS degree possibly with a minor in Business (which is what Im doing).

yup it is a bachelor of commerce in MIS , although the computer science portion is heavy ,almost that of the BS in computer science , so basically for any kind of systems analyst job an MIS degree is not that helpful?

MIS would be the better degree for a business analyst but if you want to program and take advantage of your MIS degree, try looking towards programming in companies in the financial areas.

SAP Financials, Oracle Financials, Peoplesoft - etc....companies that use these or similar tools love programmers that they do not have to teach basic finance so that they can program.
Companies like Accenture, Booz Allen, etc... frequently hire MBAs, CPAs, etc then teach them how to program for their financial clients.

Either way, good luck
