The flight from Tokyo to Washington is something like 10 hours - Joburg to Washington is even longer. This means that by the time they get there theres either a very sleep deprived person with a gun or at some point there has been a person asleep with a gun.
Which is it?

What I was wondering is if the flight crew (including attendants) knew who the macshal was, obviously theyd have to pretend to be a normal passenger right? So what happens if he happened to stand up and you saw a gun in his pocket? Sounds like a potential disaster to me.

Also I assume that sleeping on the job wouldnd be allowed. Theyd be expected to stay awake, its no different from a security guard standing at a door for 10 hours.

So, youll have to stay awake and see who else is awake and then youll know that hes a sky marshall??? mmmmmm, also, if I manage to get the gun inside the plane, the flight attendants will think Im a sky marshall.
I dont think so, I think the crew knows who the sky marshall is, also they might pretend to sleep or have a light sleep, I dunno, thinking that someone carries a gun in a plane makes me freak out, what happens if the gun fires by its own??? emergency landing, the people will go nuts in the plane

I am a firm believer that if God had intended us to fly he would have given us wings.

Flying should be banned for the following reasons;

Terrorists
The spread of deseases
The spread of undisirable persons
Air pollution
And worse of all.......air hostesses who seem to be on a mission to keep make up manufacturers in business! and they all seem to be stuck up their own bottoms!!

OK yes yes I am a big scaredy cat who is frightened of flying, hence I alway drive from UK to Bavaria cos I luv to drive and yes I do believe it is safer!

All joking aside...yes I am joking, the world would be a better place without planes, cars, buses, Tony Blair, trains and the dreaded tomato soup.....aghhh it is the devilss source!

sorry...I think I lost the plot:(

But wouldnt it be so much more relaxing to take a paddle steamer?

Life is all too much in the fast lane these days :(

I cant speak for the sky marshal, but I know that most airlines will have "extra" pilots onboard lengthy flights. Pilots are expected to sleep on these long flights while the "extra" pilot takes over. I wouldnt find it hard to believe they do the same thing with sky marshals. But does this happen on every flight, or just a few here and there? No idea...

Its a sad world we live in where violence seems to be the answer to everything!

Humans seem hell bend on distroying everthing they touch, including themselves:(

Whats wrong with everyone just getting on with their own lives, leaving others alone, have a few beers and make......mmmmm sweet lurvvvvvve:)

Well, thats just a dream, while humans cant get along with each other things will be the same, while religions keep saying the other religions are the infidels, well...
Anyway Hog, flying is safer, well, safer while theres not a guy that decides to take over the plane and park it in buildings or even worst park in the middle of the city, in the meantime, flying is safer than a car.
I think tomatoes soup is evil too and sky marshals do take some naps in the plane

Come to think of it, thats just what we need: drunk, co-ed pilots
getting busy the ****pit. Theres safety for ya. ;)

Just hope they dont push the intercom button.

Actually, I think Dave Barry has it covered:

Statistics prove that when youre riding in a commercial aircraft seven miles above the Earths surface, youre actually three times as safe as when youre riding in an automobile seven miles above the Earths surface!

Zero times three is still zero. ;)
