Software ideas.

Ironically, if youre a good salesman (or you know one) there are many absurd ideas that would make bucks.

Scheduling, medical billing...

Im doing some of that now as a sort of independant contractor for a small company which finds people who want the software. Once a version is done, we just remodify it and resell it as needed. The first sell is pretty much breakeven and after that is gravy.

Grid controls.

On that note, any useful controls.

I can think of dozens of controls that Id want to speed things up, flex grid type controls being one major one lacking from vs.net.

C1 has some you can download for free, but they have two flexgrid controls, which crossover in functionality. The classic does most of the things I need, but the advanced wont do some of the really basic things, but does more advanced things.

Whatever you do, if you do a control, do good documentation with it.

I think Divil is an example of how an individual can do things professionally.

Divil is a professional, I wouldnt expect any less from him or any other professional on these forums.

Yes, and hes an individual and more professional than quite a few companies (non-individuals) that Ive seen

What about a WYGIWYW frontend ?

You could for example start with a text processor and then move on to a compiler.

is that What You Get Is What You Want?!?! :)

Id love to hear some good ideas for making money too. I have plenty of time at the moment. Id love to make a game (and I kind of have), but its really hard creating projects by yourself. Id like to create or join a bigger project somewhere, where we can motivate each other to stay focused (as opposed to work where we are motivated by money and management.)

Now is not a good time to be investing time in writing a grid control. Theres a brand new grid control in the next version of .net that will be fully customizable and promises to beat most of the commercial ones out there at the moment.

Yep. What you get is what you want.

I have made no good experiences with developing a game.

In my case it was a management console for a PBeM game that was - in its original version - a text based DOS programm. Strict sequence of actions. No break within. No transactions.

I made a better, faster, windows based version. I even programmed the tools to port the data from the old textfile format to *.mdb.
I asked for about USD 5.
There are basically hundreds of United (thats the name of the game) players out there. I received 5 requests and ended up giving away the program for free. :-)

The "Evolutionary Computing Framework" again?
Nope - database frontend program for developers with sourcesafe integration. Got much of it done but the parsing and syntax colouring is ropey mundo...

Well, in my free time Ive been developing an administrative app, Ive been on that for a couple months now and still too much to go, I travel a lot inside and outside the US, many companies dont spend money on getting an administrative app, they buy the computers and do all the stuff in excel.
If you offer a really cheap and easy to use administrative application they will buy it, an example of this its a company in Mexico city, developed an application for AD agencies, sold it for 50 bucks (or less) was a really good application, many Ad agencies bought it, and when they needed the support, well, 100 bucks per hour, oh, you need a modification on the app, no problem, 1,500 bucks.

How about MP3 player which has the works, ie obviously play music, edit a songs tags, song libraries, playlists etc.

Last night I actually started one. Got it playing the music, volume controls, balance, playlist. It uses DX9 to play the music.

So, if anyone is interested in writing one or has one, I would love some extra help in some sound type of stuff. More so with setting a type of equilizer to enable Rock/Pop/Hall/etc type settings.

I can post it if anybody is interested in seeing it.

Im sorry, but I think that MP3 players have been done to death.

True, but what if you have never tried it before like myself???

And you also see new MP3 players all the time with something better than the last one. Just look at all the games now. How many spinoffs of Tetris will there be? They are all based on the same gameplay but each one is slightly different that makes it unique and more attractive to one type of person.

The wider variety of programming you try has to be a benefit to yourself.

Sorry, Im not trying to be negative or discourage you from developing an MP3 player, Im just trying to think of NEW ideas of software, or software that is so bad that it would be nice if a good version was developed.

I know where you are coming from. When I did searches on MP3 players, there were tons.

How about some antispy software that works? Instead of antispy software that contains its own spy scripts.

Even file compression - Look into other methods to compress files smaller than before

It all comes down to what your interests are. Look into something that could help your day to day activities.

Antispy software is like virus checkers, high maintenance.

File compression, although useful and interesting, is over researched, hell there are hundreds of PhD projects on it right now.

Right now Im thinking about developing a program so that I can install a webcam at my desk at work, and upload pictures menually with FTP so that I dont annoy our very fussy firewall here at work... and I guess Id like a wireless webcam too...
