Adobe Reader for Windows 98SE

Hi,
I need some information on the Adobe Reader for 98SE. What is the latest
version of Adobe Reader that can be used by 98SE? There are some things that
I cannot view using the Adobe 6.0.1. I was wondering how high I can go
without having problems with the computer. Would Adobe 6.0.2 work?

Mine is 6.0.6 and it seems to work OK on my Win98 SE. I update via
Adobe Reader > Help > Update > and it says that there are 'No further
updates available at this time.

As Emrys mentioned, and AFAIK, 6.0.6 is the latest update for Acrobat Reader 6.0.x.
Version 6.0.x is the last version that works in Win98SE.

You have to use the built-in update utility in Acrobat Reader to get the latest
updates, and you must install the updates in order.....you can't just install 6.06
over 6.01; you must first install 6.02 and so forth. They will be offered when you
check for updates by opening Acrobat Reader, then clicking the Help menu> Check for
Updates, and selecting all the updates to the reader itself.

Glee and Emrys,
I just got done downloading all the updates. I did them one at a time in
the correct sequence, so there would be no mistakes. All downloaded now. Now
I will go up and have it let me know when updates are available.

difference in Angel's case of being able to view those documents. ???

IOW, aren't most or all of those 6.0.1, 6.0.2, (etc), updates just
security-based, and not feature-based? I couldn't find the page that
details the exact changes (like the revision history), but maybe it's
somewhere.

Hi Bill,
I did all the updates for Adobe 6. I have found that some of the pdfs
out there are not geared to use these older machines. It is a shock to those
putting out these pdfs that we are still using the old 98 and 98se machines.
Do the companies think that all are going to get rid of our old machines?
No, why should we? When I try to get the stuff, Adobe says to download the
latest Reader. Evidently, the people that create these pdfs are using the
Adobe 9 or something of that sort. I do not think that the latest Adobe will
work on the 98SE. It becomes a real challenge to use Windows 98SE when all
the companies are using the newest or almost newest version of everything.

No, they probably won't fix her issues with displaying some documents, but in my
experience most PDF documents still open and display in version 6 (and even version
5) after warning that they may not display correctly.

It's important to update whatever version is used to fix security issues, regardless
of whether it fixes a display problem.

You can see the updates for various versions here...although they describe the Pro
and Standard versions, the issues addressed apply to Acrobat Reader also:

Clicking the links will give you some info about what they address....as you
mentioned, mostly security issues.

What I find helpful with older versions or Acrobat Reader is to turn off the
facility to automatically open PDF files in the browser....IOW to disable the
plug-in and uncheck the option to integrate with the browser. I then download PDF
files to a temp folder for offline reading, and delete them when I'm done. This has
worked for me even at income tax filing sites where they tell me I need a newer
version of the Reader in order to display their forms in the browser. I simply
bypass that option altogether and open them locally, with no problem. YMMV.

Glee,
After I read the documents that I can, I usually download the documents
onto my desk top in a folder. Some won't open at all. Like you said, that
even though it says they won't display properly, they do.The ones that do
not open, I toss. I unchecked the box as you suggested.

Will Foxit integrate itself into Mozilla Firefox? When I click on a pdf
document in Firefox, it calls up
the Adobe Reader. Will Foxit work the same way?

I use Foxit Reader exclusively on Win98SE. Works great, much smaller
footprint. To make Foxit the default PDF reader in Firefox 2.0.0.7 go
to "Tools", "Options", "Content", then at the bottom click on "Manage"
in File Types, then scroll through until you locate "FDF" + "XFDF",
click on each of these lines, then click "Change Action", then check
"open them with this application", then Browse for Foxit, then click
OK. Foxit will then become the default PDF Reader for each of these 2
formats. This is how I accomplished the task (saw these instructions
on a Firefox or Foxit website). They seem to work, I am not of the
computer generation, so I can't swear to this tweak, it seems to work
for me.

Never tired it with Firefox, but according to this info, it should work:
"Works... with Firefox and even more so when paired with the PDF Download
Extension (which works with Firefox 1.5.0.X, Firefox 2.0/Bon Echo &
(developmental) Firefox 3 Gran Paradiso/Minefield.
Here are the steps needed to integrate Foxit with Firefox's PDF Download
Extension:

Once PDF Download has been installed a new selection, "PDF Download -
Options" will appear in your Tools Menu. Select this option.
On the 'General Tab', for Default Action, select 'Open PDF'
On the 'PDF opening' Tab, for the PDF File Opening, select 'Use this viewer'
Click 'Browse' in Windows Explorer locate the Foxit Reader (FoxitReader.exe)
and click 'OK'
Click 'OK' again to exit out of the PDF Download - Options.

Now whenever you come across a PDF File, Firefox will automatically load in

I should have added this, but forgot to. :-)

4. . How to set Foxit as my default reader?
Open "My computer"->"Tools"->"folder option"->"file type"-> find out
"pdf"->"Change" and choose Foxit Reader.Or you can download installer
version from our website. And install it and Foxit reader will be your
default viewer for pdf.Or open Foxit reader, go to "help" menu, and check
the "set to default PDF reader".

by turning off the IE integration.

Well, I don't know if you have blocked my posts after my episodes with too
much thyroid medicine and being too hyper Gary but anyway here goes. I am
glad you are still in this newsgroup. PCR and/or anyone else please tell
Gary that I hope his health is well and things are going well for him in
California. BTW, is Adobe still supporting 98SE and if not does anyone
suggest a *.pdf reader that is currently supporting 98SE and if it costs
money then that is okay as well. Thanks in advance and Angel I hope you do
