I've got an unidentified 128MB USB 2.0 Flash Disk memory stick

On the metal flashing of the USB shield is written:
G128
FM26C0040

When plugged in, the New Hardware Wizard does not find the right
driver for it.

Where can I get the right driver for this device?

[I'm running Win98 on a Dell Optiplex GX-110 system]

Flashdisk drivers are usually supplied by their manufacturers
(see this one's web site.)

Standard Win98 has only USB version 1; Win98SE was released
to provide drivers for USB version 2. This may be your main problem.

I should have explicitly said Win98, NOT Win98SE

I found several Win98SE drivers at several locations. The best being
at driverguide.

But since I had a bad experience trying to run Adobe Acrobat Reader
set up for Win 98SE on this Win98 machine I am reluctant to use a
driver that lists ONLY Win98SE as the OS

You may find it very difficult to get a working driver for Win98 Gold.

I just noticed that the highest version allowable for Adobe Acrobat Reader
is different for Win98 and Win98SE. More specifically, (IIRC), version
6.x is the highest for Win98SE, but version 5.x is the highest allowable for
Win98. I'm not sure if that relates to what your problem or not, however.

Um, probably not unless he's trying to access PDF files on the memory stick with no
driver, using the wrong version of Acrobat Reader. ;-)
Seriously though, how would that relate to the flash drive driver issue?

Maybe I didn't read far enough. He mentioned a problem with his Adobe
Reader on Win98SE not working on Win98, and I just leaped from there.

yes, acroat 5 is as high as it goes on Win98 and something else on
Win98SE

Adob's top version allowed of 5 works VERY well, no problems [shows
you how good Adobe is]

That was not my question. I have no problem with Acrobat and Adobe.
I only mention it to point out that there are some subtle differences
that may become important.

Again, I need a driver for this memory stick.

and when plugged into the WinXP system, it simply comes up with USB
2.0 Flash Disk and standard driver

Win98's lack of support for USB may indeed be the problem.

It's just that a memory stick loaned to me by someone had worked
instantly in the same system, so I was caught off guard when this
memory stick failed to operate in the system. There must be a way to
get this memory stick to work, even if transferring slowly.

Until your reply, I thought I was in the WinXP group where their
solution to *any* problem is to go buy more.

Robert:

If the Usb memory stick is indeed USB *2* that may be the root of your
problem.

Windows 98 (not SE) only made an attempt to use USB *1* devices
because that was all there were at the time. I've occasionally see a
simular problem with old motherboards that have USB 1 hardware. Some
new USB things will work just fine with Win98SE and the "universal"
driver, some will not.

If you need the files off the thing ask someone with a newer setup to
transfer the files to CD for you.

I had the same problem, a new stick did not work on one PC, the stick
supplier wrote that driver for that stick was part of Win2k so they did
NOT supply any driver (Kingston).

I found this driver, "wtgenusb.zip", and installed it and it works just
fine.

Robert, I would highly suggest upgrading to 98 Second Edition. I know
it will cost you some money but sometimes for functionality and useage
features it is worth spending some money to get what you want at least that
is how I see it. In my opinion, 98 Second Edition is the best operating
system that Microsoft has yet produced and I think everyone would agree with
me with the statement that it is at least the best 9x consumer operating
system Microsoft produced.

As Chris Quirke, MVP has told me that Windows ME did have built in USB
support but with Windows ME which was sadly the last in the 9x consumer line,
Microsoft removed too many features such as easy access to MS-DOS. In
addition, Internet Explorer had some features such as when you minimized
browser windows and had to switch with an arrow between them in Windows ME
that I did not care for. This is just my take on the subject for what it is
worth. Have a nice rest of the week.

That solved my problem, works great.

Very difficult to find. Driverguide kept taking me out to a
nonexistent website.
Doing a search at
http://www.wintricks.it turned up zip, but
found it by going directly to
http://www.wintricks.it//download/wtgenusb.zip

and it worked perfectly on the Win98 system
