Word & Outlook references and Interop.dlls

When referenceing Word or Outlook in an application,

1. Is it necessary to include the corresponding Interop.dll with your project?
2. Can the dll be referenced in the code, perticulary in Word, and thus eliminate the need to reference the application? (Im using spell check)
