Should I get SP2??

Hey,
I read a number of pages saying stuff like ".NET Doesnt work with SP2" - has this been resolved, if not, is there a way to get around this?

Should I even get SP2 in the first place? becuase i heard a bunch of programs dont work with SP2 now :(.

Im currently on a Windows 2000 SP4 Server. And .NET is working perfectly.

I think you must talk about SP2 of Windows XP. Well... I think its ok. Maybe by taking a look at www.google.com and youll see if theres big major problem with it.

I dont think there will be. I found something however... when I installed an SP (anyone) it cant create any project. VS is able to open them but not create them. So I had to "Repair" the installation and everything went fine. Beside that... I dont think theres major problem.
 
Speaking just of my own experience, I loaded SP2 for WinXP last night on my home machine. I run XP Pro on a Dell Dimension 4600.

Up to the point of SP2, I had kept my XP Pro updated with all the patches that Microsoft had provided by way of auto updates.

I run VS.NET 2003 Professional edition, which uses the .NET 1.1 framework.

So far everything has run just fine without any issues for me.

Typically most of my work is done within VS.NET 2003, but I also do some MS SQL2000 work with the MSDE version that I have loaded on this machine. I do some image/photo editing with Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0 and that seems to work just fine as well.

You might want to check out the Microsoft page regarding what to expecte during the update, and follow the link to your manufacturers site to see if they have any words of wisdom to impart. I know for Dell there are a couple of models they do not suggest updating yet because of issues with video drivers.

You should also check your anti-virus software and make sure it is agreeable with SP2. I use McAfee and it had to be updated before loading SP2, no big deal though as I subscribe to their update program and just went and downloaded what I was in need of.

Can you link to some of them? Id heard this "rumor" from a co-worker, but he tends to yell out "the sky is *falling*!!!" a lot so I mostly ignore him.

Most of applications that fail, use the internet in an unsafe manner, but can be configured to work. I was surprised to see some big names on their like SQL Server and VS.NET.

At the same time Id recommend installing it, noone can afford to NOT install these MS patches now...
 
The applications arent exactly failing to work - it just requires a bit of configuration to decide which apps are allowed to access the internet. A big difference IMHO to ".NET Doesnt work with SP2"
 
Looks like I spoke to soon on what appeared to be my successful application of SP2. At the moment my machine wont boot up unless I use safe mode. :confused:

Based on what I am reading in this thread at the moment, I think it must have something to do with MSDE SQL2000, IIS, and VS.NET that I have on my machine. Both SQL2000 and IIS are set to start on boot up and I am guessing that is what is keeping it from working at the moment.
 
Well... I went to www.Microsoft.com and read more about SP2. I was much more interested in IE upgrades. They, AT LEAST, tighten their security !

So IMHO... you better install it but... make sure that those "Now un-functionnal" software will not cause some dramatic result to your computer :p
 
Yes, apparently I just did not do enough reading to adequately prepare for things before I applied it.

I think I will initially remove it through the add/remove programs option and get myself back to the state I was in before I applied it. Then Ill need to take the time to truly read up on everything and then reapply it with the knowledge of what areas I will then have to modify to make things work.

Wish me luck this evening, Ill start the add/remove process this evening after work while mowing the yard. Hoping to have things functional again by Saturday so I can sit back down and continue my studies for the 70-315 exam :)
 
irasmith: I dont think that these applications are your problem, because if you read the support articles, sp2 only affects remote debugging...
 
Actually, its not looking like that was the problem after all. When at home over lunch today I tried booting it up into safe mode, wouldnt go. Starting to look like the hard drive is bad at this point. Gets so far into the boot process and just seems to hang. So looks like Ill be shopping for a hard drive at this point.
 
I installed SP2 10 min ago. It works fine for me :-). I only noticed a couple new changes:
"Advanced Security" - Windows detects your AntiVirus, Firewall and Automatic Update status.

and my "network connection status" icon now animates.. O_o.


All my programs work fine im happy, but i noticed a deal with MSN messenger - it had to "Repair" the installation (does it automatically) after installing SP2.

Other than that, my friend with XP Home noted that the status bar (the one thats under "Windows XP" when your computer boots up) changed from green to blue (making it more like XP pro) lol.

Oh i noticed more:
Popup blocker
The "Download" box says Run and Save rather than Open and Save... and now it asks whether you want to install the file or not o_O!

Do you have an AMD 64bit processor? I heard they had issues like that and microsoft has to make a special SP2 just for those users.
Ive had no problems at all either and i have a ton of apps. Just simple configurations for the most part.
 
No on the AMD processor. I am running a Dell Dimension 4600 desktop with an Intel Pentium IV processor 2.4GHz with 512 meg of ram, using XP Pro as the operating system.

I really believe the hard drive just happened to crash just after I had done all the work on downloading and applying SP2.

The good news is that I am on my way back up. While down-and-out yesterday evening after work over the hard drive going bad in my machine, I found a good deal at CompUSA on a Seagate drive that is 160gig, my former one was 120gig. With the mail in rebate the drive is basically half price :)

So I purchased the drive. I installed it in the machine late last night, using my Dell provided XP Pro cd loaded the base operating system.

I picked back up on the reload this morning and as of now have things close to being like they were before the install of SP2. So Im moving right along thankfully :cool:

Cool. I know a friend of mine had a recurring reboot problem after the install.But he had to uninstall it. He had a 64 bit AMD. Its always nice to be able to ugrade something after it breaks.
 
I agree with you, being able to un-upgrade something if there is a problem is the best route to go. I am really glad that SP2 is removeable from within the add/remove programs area. Later, when I get to the point of trying to load SP2 again, I should be able to use the add/remove feature to un-do it if there is really any hardware or software conflicts with what I am running.

For the moment Im one tired little computer user. Just completed reloading most of the application and development software onto the system. The new hard drive is doing great. I do plan on loading SP2, but for the moment Im taking a break and leaving the system at the SP1 level. Figure Ive done enough work for today :)
 
ARGH! I restarted my comp (after 3 days after installing sp2 lol), and i just realized its SO SLOW!!! Theres no spyware, I did a registry cleanup, i did everything...

is this SP2 thats causing it to do this? My new computer is going SLOW, first time this happened! Should i reinstall sp2? It takes almost a full 30 seconds to boot up and log in!!!! It used to take from 5-7 seconds before sp2 (heh, yep i timed it :)),

but 30 seconds.. youve got to be kidding me. Thats a LONG wait... the only programs I have are: Zone Alarm (I isntalled Zone Alarm Security Suite trial over my Zone Alarm Pro trial and hehe - something in the install screwed it up and its not a trial anymore) Far cry, Doom3, and .NET. (and Adaware + REgistry Cleaner), it has no reason to go slow. An extra 25 second wait is totally unacceptable for a new comp (p4c 3.0, 1 gb ddr3200)

Is anyone else experiencing these symptoms? My comp is only slow when i start it up (when I boot up, it takes like 5 seconds just to show the Welcome screen, I see a black screen and then a few seconds later i see a mouse cursor.. then a fwe seconds later it loads the blue welcome screen)... and logging in is a pain as each icon takes about 5-6 seconds to load
