/console option doesn't seem to exist with Windows Server 2008

I've recently started testing Terminal Services using Windows Server 2008
Beta 3, and I've noticed that using the command mstsc.exe /console does not,
in fact, provide a console connection.

Has this option been removed? Is there any way to obtain this functionality
using Windows Server 2008?

Thanks.

If I remember correctly, MS has done away with a classic console
connection. All sessions are now treated the same. Are you not able to
do something while connected? I may be wrong on this though I know it
was discussed but not sure it was truly implemented.

Re: /console option doesn't seem to exist with Windows Server 2008

Thanks for your reply Jeff.

I haven't done extensive testing to see if there are things that cannot be
done, so I'll need to keep an eye out. The biggest issue so far is that the
terminal server is configured to "run the following program when the user
logs on", but this program is meant to be run when end-users log on and not
when administrators log on.

This wasn't an issue with Windows 2003 because administrators would log onto
the console. Since this program presents an application control panel that,
among other things, hides the underlying windows desktop it makes remote
management of the server a little difficult.

Re: /console option doesn't seem to exist with Windows Server 2008

Then you have been relying on Administrators always connecting to
the console session to avoid the application.

Instead, configure a GPO with this starting application, and filter
the security for the GPO to exclude Administrators from it's
effects.

That's correct, no /console connections in 2008 anymore.
Session 0 still exists, but it hosts only services and is not an
interactive session anymore.

There's a blog about /console you may find it informative:
