Hi Guys,

I have recently noticed that I have a process running everytime That I have
vista running, it whirrs and clicks and grinds and crunches but I cannot
locate it at all. It is not showing intask manager. I have scanned with
spybot S&D, Ad Aware 2007, I am using onecare live and that hasn't picked
anything up either. what could it possibly be, it is driving me mad, it is
constant and unrelenting. I have also tried Backlight to see if I have a
rootkit installed but nothing is showing.

Any help would be gratefully received

Vista 32 Home premium

Thx

Try installing Process Explorer and look for odd processes there:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/utilities/processexplorer.mspx

Or try running process monitor (same site, different page) to see
what's accessing the disk.

Given this is Vista, I'd guess it's either the defraging scheduled
task or the indexer.

Re: unexplained process running all the time

Thx guys but it is still running and it is driving me mad.......mad I say.
It isn't the defragmenter but how do I tell if it is the indexer and what do
I do if it is?

I have even sys restored to a week ago but the process is still running

Re: unexplained process running all the time

Maybe an obvious suggestion, but have you clicked on the "Show process from
all users" button on the processes tab of Task Manager? - otherwise you
won't see all processes.

The Vista indexer processes are SearchIndexer.exe, SearchProtocolHost.exe
and SearchFilterHost.exe.
