Barcode Reader

I need to locate a control or visual basic.net code snippet or something that will allow me to take a bitmap, search the bitmap for a barcode and read the data from the barcode. Any help with how to accomplish this task would greatly be appreciated.

Snippit? This is a fairly complicated algorithm. Ive never heard of any third party software that does this (and Ive worked with barcodes more than a bit), but I didnt fire up the search engine either. however, if you understand how barcode readers work, you should be able to write one.

Unforunately I do not understand how a barcode works, can you recommend any resources.

Unless you want to learn more than I do about processing images, youll be looking for a third party control. Here are a couple of decent ones, but be prepared for sticker shock.
