MS Security patch doesn't "take" with successive scans

Running Win 98 SE,

Upon visiting the Mocrosoft Windowns Update site, it scans my systems
and says I need:

"Cumulative Security Update for Outlook Express 6 Service Pack 1
(KB837009)"

I do use OE (version 6.00.2800.1123), so I click on install, and it
goes "through the motions". No reboot required...

I scan again, and I get the SAME result, I need:

"Cumulative Security Update for Outlook Express 6 Service Pack 1
(KB837009)"

I check my installation history, and it indicates the Update was
successfully installed!

I re-install, and rescan, same result! What gives??

That is the correct version of OE-- it matches mine!

It could be these three need to come in, in the following sequence...

(a) Q330994
(b) Q837009
(c) Q823353 (This is 3rd, but no longer offered at Windows Update.)

And, "Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Install/Uninstall tab" for me
shows... Outlook Express Q823353
....but it was Outlook Express Q837009
....& before that Outlook Express Q330994.
....I never took Outlook Express Q887797, which also could be involved.

Do you have any of the three/four? Then, uninstall whichever is in
there, & go see what happens at Windows Update. That might be the full
cure, but I guess visit the site yet once more afterwards.

I think you want to end up with at least Q837009. But I have Q823353, &
Glee was once considering it.

What shows up at... IE6, Help, About...?...

SP1, Q313829, Q328970, Q328389, Q324929, Q810847, Q813951, Q816506,
Q813489, Q330994, Q818529, Q822925, Q828750, Q824145, Q832894,
Q837009, Q831167, Q823353, Q867801, Q833989, Q834707, Q889293,
Q867282, Q891781, Q890923, Q883939, Q896688, Q905915, Q912812,
Q916281, & Q918439.

Note how all THREE of mine show up there... Q330994, Q837009, Q823353...
& in the sequence in which they were installed. It could be sequence is
important. (But only the last shows up in Add/Remove Programs, meaning
the first two were replaced.)

Uh-oh...
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;887797
Cumulative update for Outlook Express (KB887797)
....is an optional one (not offered at Windows Update) I currently do not
intend to take. I do not know I have the conditions of which it speaks,
& I do not like the rigmarole of activating bits/pieces of it.

Re: MS Security patch doesn't "take" with successive scans

I'd recommend getting your IE issues straightened out first. (And I thought
you'd said the machine /was/ fully patched at Windows Update?!)

OE Help > About > Files: What versions of MSOE.DLL, INETCOMM.DLL and
DIRECTDB.DLL are listed here (e.g., v6.00.2600.1234? (If you posted here
using OE instead of Google Groups, I'd know this already.)

I downloaded update KB837009 and ran it "offline". It stopped and
told me that it was OE6 SP1 and won't install, seems I only have OE6,
not SP1! Wonder why the update site thinks otherwise.....

My add/remove list has "Microsoft Oultook Express 6" and "Outlook
Express Q823353".

IE Versions:; SP1; Q916281; q313829;

msoe.dll version 6.00.2800.1437
inetcomm.dll version 6.00.2800.1441
directdb.dll version 6.00.2800.1123

I didn't realize that security "patches" were not "taking" untio I
revisited windows update and saw the same thing I thought was
installed earlier come up again.

Follow these instructions to the letter:

Clear History, delete Cookies and delete Temporary Internet Files (including
offline files) via IE: Tools > Options > General, then...

1. Download the Cumulative Security Update for Outlook Express 6 Service
Pack 1 (KB837009; all OSS) from the following link, saving it to your
Desktop:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=925628BD-1B5F-4B21-8DB6-EDE1C73F97B5

[ Optional: 2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode. (During the reboot, keep
pressing the F8 key until the Windows Startup menu appears > Choose Safe
Mode > Enter.)

3. Rename the downloaded file to KB837009.EXE and copy it to C:\ (the root
directory of drive C; assumes drive C is the boot drive)

4. Start > Run > (type in) C:\KB837009.EXE /N:V [Note the 2 spaces!] >
press ENTER

5. Close the command window.

6. Reboot [into Windows] and check in at Windows Update to see if the
problem persists.

The pasted link didn't work, but I managed to poke around microsoft's
site for the update file.

Wow! That appears to have worked!! Thanx!!

I can't find my MS-DOS manual, what did the "double space"/N:V do for
the file?

MS changed the download location since I composed my canned reply. The
current link is

/N:V means no version checking

That command basically tells Windows to ignore the fact that any other
cumulative update for OE are installed. Long story about that screw-up and
it took us a while to figure out how to resolve the problem. cf.

| 887797 isn't offered to Win98.

OK, thanks. I'll... adjust... that Master Post, then, to say it no
longer is offered. And good riddance! I'm pretty sure it was offered
once, though-- or at least that someone here must have been using it.
But it wasn't me!

|

Well, I see PA Bear solved it. Glad to hear it. I'll pull that solution
into my Master Post. It's been a long time since anyone had that
KB837009 problem!

So... you no longer are getting those crashes involving MSTime.dll too?

Let's not drag this thread into OT territory, please. Thanx.

I guess his answer belongs in his other thread, anyhow. But I'm willing
presume he was cured.
