Windows explorer keeps closing when I go into the windows directory in Vista
64

This just started happening today. Windows Dir. draws then explorer closes
with error message stating windows explorer has to close & then it restarts.

I can reproduce this even after reboot. The first time I go to the windows
directory after a reboot everything works fine.The second time I click on
the windows directory it closes & then restarts.
Anyone seen this behavior before or anyone know of a fix?

Check the event viewer and see if you can find any clues, like an error # we
can google on the web.
Did you try good ol' system restore?

Things I've tried so far:

Ran AVG Anti-virus latest release
Ran AVG Anti-spyware latest update
Ran spy-bot search & destroy
Ran ShellExView v1.17 & disabled all (non) Microsoft shell extensions(very
nice program )Web Site: http://www.nirsoft.net.
So far no luck in finding what's causing explorer to close when I open the
windows directory.
System otherwise seems fine.
Will run scannow & see if it turns up anything.

anyone have any ideas why this is occurring?

I googled around and found zillions of hits with your problem.
First of all, the "band-aid".
Change your folder view to "list" insted of "large icons" or whatever it is.
That should leave explorer stable.
I found that tip here:

Something more elaborate is here:

and could be the final fix for your problem.

The issue seems to arise from the preview of a video and the corresponding
mpegsplitter.ax error in your log.

Thks Cal, I will uninstall vista codec paks & see if the error goes away.
search turned up:MPegSplitter.ax in C:\program files \Vista codec Pack &
C:\program files (86)\Vista codec Pack

Thks for your help Carlos i'll try changing view as temp fix after I
uninstall Vista codec Paks (If uninstalling paks has no effect.) I found a
reference to ffdshow as causing my problem so I uninstalled it. This did not
fix my problem. I'll have to re-install ffdshow LOL.

Re: Problem with Windows Explorer

Avoid "codec packs" at all costs -- this is only one of a myriad of problems
that they can cause (problems with Windows Media Player, Windows Movie Maker,
Windows DVD Maker, Windows Photo Gallery).

Download and install codecs ONLY from the manufacturer of the codec. Download a
free little utility called GSpot to analyze video clips. It will tell you what
codec the clip needs and if it is installed on your system.

And later on install ffdshow (http://www.free-codecs.com/download/FFDShow.htm)
I have been using it in Vista x64 for decoding video and audio with no
problems.
That codec will work with all the 32-bit players in your system.
If you want to use WMP 64-bit, then download also (both ffdshow's can be
installed simultaneosly without interference) ffdshowx64 from here:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=173941&package_id=214245&release_id=523000

Seems to be fixed now.I uninstalled Vista codec Pak & Vista codec Pak (64).
