How do i compare '.' seperated number ?

Hi
I am reading 2 string from database. Say string1 =7.0.11.1 and string2=7.0.12.34
How do I compare 2 such strings ? I want to find out which one is bigger ?
string can be anything like 1 dot or 2 dots etc
