That was too easy... I took some good advice and chose to donate most of my
HP rebates back to Bill for a copy of Vista Ultimate 64-bit. Perhaps some of
you will remember my ranting and raving about how my new HP-OEM (m8124n)
didn't come with the 64-bit DVD.

Oh well, I got over it and tonight I installed Ultimate 64-bit without a
hitch... I opted to let Vista Ultimate take some GB's from (C:) to create
the new partition (J:). After 47 updates I'm live and this is my second
transmission via mail...

Sure, I haven't tested all of my hardware yet but hey, what the heck, I can
always shut down and load x86 if I'm in a pinch for whatever aint workin'...

Welcome aboard. An advantage you have, is you have bought both 32-bit and
64-bit versions, and you are licensed to have both on the machine at the
same time in dual boot if you find you have favourite hardware or software
that won't run on 64-bit. Many of us did that in the early stages of XP64
and gradually replaced the hardware (Charlie has some great posts on what to
look for in printers) and software and found that we used 32-bit less and
less. Moving to new technologies always requires a little pain in that
respect as some of the hardware won't ever have drivers written and software
that the company either won't bother updating or they have gone out of
business or sold the product to a competitor who has their own product line.

machine in 64bit, since, as you say, he's got a license for both. Of course,
he can't do _both_ a VM and dual boot. That, I'm afraid, would require a
third license. (and Yes, I think that's both wrong a silly, but it's MS's
sandbox and I can't change the rules.)

Since I don't use it, I don't think about it, but, of course that could be
the best solution if he has sufficient memory. Have they fixed the problem
with not being able to use USB devices from the VM?

No, they have not fixed the USB issue in VPC2007
I can use my Wireless Keyboard+Mouse USB combo (XP 32-bit guest), but the
rest of the USB gizmos won't work (by design).

Then, since 80% of the devices I needed 32-bit for would have made a VM

You might want to try VMWare, which supports USB devices.
VMware Workstation: http://www.vmware.com/download/ws/
is not free but...
VMware Server: http://www.vmware.com/download/server/
can be downloaded and used for free!

Thanks, Carlos, but that was 'needed'. I have long since replaced all of my
hardware with 64-bit compatible. I do have two remaining uses for XP86 and
since I have more than adequate room for it on my wife's machine it makes no
sense to change.

No, BUT if you use VMWare Workstation, you get full USB 2.0 support. And
from the MS licensing perspective you're in the same place. (There might be
USB 2 support on VMWare Server, which is free, but I'm not sure. Last I
looked it was still only USB 1.1.)

This is a case where I would definitely recommend a non-MS solution.

Have they upgraded the support to USB2 in the Server product yet? Last I
looked it was still only USB1.1, which is OK for some things, but not all,

You can create a VM with the free VMware Server - Server is not officially
supported on Vista though some have got it working - and then transfer it
to the free VMWare Player which supports USB2 on x64 XP and Vista.
