Driver Headaches with new box - please help !

I decided to buy a high-end custom gaming rig that shipped with Vista,
which I immediately wiped and installed XP SR2 for application
compatibility reasons. I have gone to great pains to use all the
updated drivers (including using the driver update tools like Driver
Genius and Driver Magic) and I still get system crashes about 2-3
times a week, especially when playing graphic intensive games. The
error message after the crash consistently identifies the problems as
driver related.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a way to update all drivers
easily and effectively ? Do old drivers require removal before new
ones are installed ? I need some help to better experience my major
investment.

Unless I missed it, exactly what driver is being identified as the culprit
for the crashes?

Give us a sample of the error message.

Most drivers can be installed over older versions, but Nvidia graphic
drivers seem to work better if you uninstall the old ones first.

I assume you installed chipset drivers?

Is it the same program causing crashes, or various programs?

It could even be PSU or RAM related. Are you overclocking CPU or GPU card?

direct from the manufacturers sites.

And since you failed to list any err msgs, or otherwise identify the driver,
my driver crystal ball tool isnt working either

Thanks all for the further questions and comments. I replicated the
crashing - I first get the BSD, then a reboot, then the following
message appears in a browser:

Problem caused by Device Driver

You received this message because a device driver installed on your
computer caused the Windows operating system to stop unexpectedly.
This type of error is referred to as a "stop error." A stop error
requires you to restart your computer.

Dobey - I wish I could identify the specific driver, I simply don't
know how to which is why I resorted to the driver tools.

to reveal the driver concerned

The Stop Error is indicating a bad driver install for a peripheral device
or a peripheal device that does not have a vendor-issued, equivalent for
Windows XP. The latter is quite possible since this "high-end" machine was
shipped with Vista. One area of probable cause: The 8800 GTS video card
is relatively new and requires DirectX 10. The video card is incompatible
with Windows XP since DirectX 10, in turn, requires Windows Vista.

Re: Driver Headaches with new box - please help !

The Series 8800 is built to support Direct-X 10 - But does
not require it to use the cards in a XP/Media Center computer.
Check nVidia's site and you'll find series 8 drivers for both XP
and Vista. XP uses Direct-X 9c and because of OS internal
code won't have Direct-X 10 back ported. So any Direct-X
10 based game will need a Vista PC to get the full Video effects.

Guys - I first uninstalled the chipset driver and installed latest
from nVidia. System seems much more stable now but time will tell...
