Is there a cal that will enable this connection? Maybe client-side? It worked
for a while, I'm guessing with a temp license on the ts, but now it gives
error about no licenses available even when no one is connected. The server
has 5 ts licenses. Also having the same problem from a Vista Home system.

Thanks

Re: SBS2k ts from xp home

You need to ask that in an SBS group. It is probably related to the SBS and
not specifically the TS. I've seen it happen, but I don't have an answer, I
never figured it out either,...but it was a test lab and so it never really
mattered.

Re: SBS2k ts from xp home

Without knowing *exactly* which licensing error you get, it is
impossible to give a definitive answer.
But most likely, you either don't have any purchased Terminal
Services CALs installed on your TS Licensing Server, or you didn't
install a TS Licensing Server at all.

To connect with an XP Home client to any Terminal Server, you need
both a server CAL and a TS CAL.

Re: SBS2k ts from xp home

The server list 5 Terminal Services per device cals installed and list 2 as
available.

And the exact error message?

Re: SBS2k ts from xp home

The message says:
The remote computer disconnected the session because of an error in the
licensing protocol.

Any help?

Re: SBS2k ts from xp home

OK, that's *not* the standard message that you get when no licenses
are available.

Do the users have Full Controll on the registry key in the client's
registry which stores the license?
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\MSLicensing

By default, Vista users don't have Write permission on this key,
and thus they cannot store the license. Could be the same on XP
Home, I've never used that.

Documented here:

Re: SBS2k ts from xp home

I will check this. I am assuming they are using the account created during
oobe as a local admin account.

Re: SBS2k ts from xp home

Yes, both the XP home system and the Vista Home premium system are using the
admin account created during oobe. Wouldn't this give the xp user full access
to the registry? I haven't been able to test the run-as on the vista machine
as of yet.

Re: SBS2k ts from xp home

Yes, on XP, that would mean full access.
Have you tried deleting the registry key completely, and than
connecting *twice*? (first time you should get a temporary license,
second time you should get a permanent license).

Re: SBS2k ts from xp home

I finally had access to the Vista machine. I tried deleting the key and
connecting and that didn't work. Next I tried running MSTSC as admin and it
worked. So then I opened regedit and changed security settings on that one
key to allow her account full control and now it works for her without using
the run-as. I have yet to get access to the XP machine but I imagine I will
follow the same course.

Thank you for your help.
