I am running vista home premium on my laptop. I want to upgrade to vista
ulitmate if can use the features provided by bitlocker. How can I check
whether my system has a TPM chip or not? I couldnt find any information on
the hardware manufacturer's website.

Thanks,
VS

Re: TPM chip for bitlocker

If the manufacturer does not say the unit contains a TPM chip, then it
almost surely does not. But you do not need TPM to run Bitlocker - granted,
it makes it a bit easier and more secure but it's not required:

Re: TPM chip for bitlocker

The PC specifications should tell you whether you have a TPM chip or not;
however, a TPM chip isn't a 'must' have, you can just as easily use
bitlocker with a USB key. All you have to do is make sure the USB key is in
the USB drive when you boot your machine. Ther bitlocker serial number is
then read and you are asked to remove the USB key as Vista boots up. I've
used this method and it works fine - just don't loose the USB flash drive
key:-)

Re: TPM chip for bitlocker

The TPM chip should also be detected in Device Manager as long as it is
enabled in the BIOS. Open Computer Management and click on Device Manager.
You should see a TPM chip as long as there is one there.

Re: TPM chip for bitlocker

Richard, John, Jesper-

Thanks for the prompt responses. My laptop doesn't have a TPM chip but I
will still try out bitlocker.

Cheers,
VS

Re: TPM chip for bitlocker

Don't forget you have to 'enable' bitlocker before you can try it out. See
