RE: Can't complete Installation - Blue Screen of Death post first boot

I was able to install Ulimate 32 with no issues. I've tried installing 64
bit twice now with a clean install. Each time I receive the
IRQL_LESS_OR_NOT_EQUAL error on the dump screen. I'm using an ASUS M2N-SLI
Deluxe MB, evga 6800GTS, 4GB of RAM (took another 4 out just in case it was
that). Any help is appreciated.

How far does it get? Maybe the BIOS is your problem, I don't have time
to look but can you check for info on the Asus website? I have the same
MB (Not tried the 64 bit install though) and I'm wondering about the BIOS.

What other boards you have in there? Can you start by setting the BIOS
options to Plug and Play O/S = NO so the BIOS has to examine hardware
again. If any of this proves useful please post back and let us know, it
could help lots of other people.

Re: Can't complete Installation - Blue Screen of Death post first

I installed the latest BIOS. I was able to get the 32bit version to work but
it only recognized 3.5GB of RAM. I have 8, thus my attempt at 64 bit. Tried
you PNP suggestion. No go. 'bout to have a drink and figure out how in the
world I spent 400 on something I'm so much difficulty with.

Re: Can't complete Installation - Blue Screen of Death post first

Hmm, and you say this a clean install so it's looking like it has to be
hardware related. Is this always the same place it happens?

I assume you had no trouble with the same RAM in 32 bit.

I can't think of any other BIOS settings that should matter but I
haven't really touched that machine since setup as it is used by someone
else and runs XP 32, but if I get chance I will see if I can have a look
at settings in case anything obvious jumps out...

Any other hardware you have installed that might be causing it?
Disconnect printers and anything USB (Just in case) and in the worst
case you could try just one stick of RAM and then swap with another, of
course that needs caution re static...

After that I guess there'll only be the disk drive, which is not
impossible but I think unlikely.

Re: Can't complete Installation - Blue Screen of Death post first boot

In general, that error is specific to a device driver. Analyzing the
dumpfile should reveal which driver is crashing and give you a hint on what
to look for updates for.

How does one update a driver before the OS is installed?

Re: Can't complete Installation - Blue Screen of Death post first

Re: Can't complete Installation - Blue Screen of Death post first

Problem isolated and workaround in place! Okay, anybody using the LITEON
LH-20A1L DVD/Lightscribe drive: It will work for installing 64-bit apps BUT
UNPLUG it after the setup restarts for finalization. Once all updates were
installed (OS) I thought I would give the drive another chance. Any takers
on what happened? It blue screened again. I think it has something to do
with the drive being picked up as a DVD-RAM drive but am unable to confirm
this. I can confirm that all works well without the drive connected. So the
workaround ~ map your other computers DVD drive and don't go to the movies
for a couple weeks as discipline for believing the LH-20A1L claim of working
with Vista (it does, just not the 64-bit version). Any suggestions on a
proving SATA DVD/Lightscribe burner for Ultimate 64?

I know of at least two ways, myself. ;-)

Well I have a Liteon DVD and had no trouble but not sure what model, I
know it was cheap. In fact I have 3 but only 2 of the machines are 64 bit.

So you are saying that if you plug the drive in and reboot Vista it crashes?

This sounds like a memory mapping conflict or something, is there
anything else on that IDE cable? I mean I know you have checked jumpers
etc but what if you unplug the "Other" device if there is one.

If I get time (and I may well not) and the opportunity I'll try
installing 64 bit on the Asus machine just out of curiosity :)

I thought it may be a mapping error myself, but finally decided to stop
'dumping' around. Its a SATA drive.
