98 SE UPGRADE

[PETER P]

I have an IBM T1451 laptop running win 98. I have a WiFI card (PCMCIA)that
I would like to use , but get a missing DLLFILE,CRYPTUI.DLL error when
installing from the CD. The card says for version 98SE and newer. Is there
any way to change win 98 to accept this Dlink DWL- G650+ card without
updating to SE?
I am trying to do this as inexpensively as possible and would prefer not
to upgrade to 98 SE if in any way possible.(not feasible financially ) I
tried a clean install of a WIN 98SE that someone gave me but around 40 files
were missing. I am quite certain that it was a pirated version. Then I
reinstalled my OEM 98 version, (athentic ) and now need a way to connect to
DSL. I had a Dlink 10/100 ethernet card but the wire is frayed and I need a
way to connect to my DSL line here in Greece.

Your basic oiptions are a real upgrade to 98SE, or an alternative operating
system.

98SE options include:

1. buy it at a retail store (full price).
2. buy a "used" copy on eBay, caigslist, or similar (cheaper).
3. find someone who is about to throw away a computer with 98SE on it and
take the 98SE CD (likely free).

Alternatives include:

1. ME (not free, and not recommended)
2. XP (not free; also check hardware requirements; XP thrives on RAM and
requires several Gig of hard drive space.)
3a. LINUX (many free versions are available; check hardware requirements of
each; depending on your hardware, you might want to use an older version of
one of these. Examples: Red Hat, Suse, Ubuntu)

3b. LINUX "live CD", meaning that you run directly from the CD, without
installing it on the hard drive. Some will auto-detect all hardware and
configure themselves accordingly. If you have enough RAM, try the KNOPPIX
CD. Insert CD, reboot, and it should eventually get to a desktop. If you
like a live CD, most can also be installed on the hard drive, often in
parallel with the existing operating system with a choice via a boot loader.

CRYPTUI.DLL isn't a Windows file, it's an Internet Explorer file. To replace it,
try reinstalling (over-install) your version of Internet Explorer.

Good news sorta. I was able to dowloand ie6 sp1 on my toshiab laptop and
load it successfully to the IBM laptop. I also spliced the dongle cable on
the PCM cia card and it is working now, albeit it very tenuously. I dl ABG7.5
and Ccleaner and will try spybot Had some problems with it initially ) or
some other antispyware tmrw.
I am hoping that by installing IEv6 I will be able to use the European ver
Dlink DWL- G650+ card and have a wifi installation that works without any
more expenses.
Do I need and can you suggest both a firewall and an antispyware. I used to
use Lavasoft free edition but I hear there are much better out there now.

am trying to squeeze as much performance out of it , so I can leave it for my
my wife to use untill I get around to a newer one for me and then I will give
her the Toshiba.

To be a bit more specific, cryptui.dll is an IE file, but a version of it was
included with Win98SE. AFAICS it was not included with Win98 original version:

Installing or reinstalling IE6 SP1 should install the file. If it is a reinstall
(overinstall) just install the components you already have installed, and it will go
very fast.

Be sure to close ALL open programs, and disable the screensaver and anti-virus,
before starting the installation. Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete and End Task on everything
but Explorer and Systray, to be sure to get most of the background apps.

After it is installed and you have rebooted, you should go to Windows Update, scan
for and install any critical updates it finds for your system. Reboot, then try
your D-Link wireless card installation. Be sure to close all open apps while
installing. Also, be sure it is not listed in Device Manager from a previous failed
installation. You might want to start in Safe Mode and make sure there are no ghost
copies of the D-Link card showing in Device Manager before installing. If there
are, remove them, then restart in normal mode and install the PC card.

This is not to say that the installation will be a success, since it does say the
requirement is Win98SE, not Win98, but it's worth a try.

From where are you installing the driver for the D-Link PC card? Is it on a disk,
or did you download it? The newest driver appears to be the topmost one here
(version 2.04):

It might be worth a try using that one.

There's not much good in the way of anti-spyware that works with Win98. The older
Ad-Aware SE was pretty good, but I don't care for the new version. I am still using
the older SE version on Win98 systems I work with, along with SpyBot Search and
Destroy, and SpywareBlaster.

Firewall......are you using a router? If so, you may not need a software firewall.

If not, ones that I know work well with Win98 are Kerio v.2.1.5:

Hey Guys ,
I was succesful installing IE 6.0 and the upgrades aside from one for
flash player. When I installed the DLINK from the CD rom ( same version as
you posted ) the driver installed , device manager sees it as working
prioperly but I got a DHCP error on reboot. This is not the same error I had
before CRYPT etc etc
A friend says the card cannot commun icate with that error. I am going
out to see if I can either get an old USB or PCMCIA card for win 98 First
Edition over here in Greece. ANy other thoughts would be greatly appreciated

You need to check the setup for the device and your other network settings
under Networking to ensure all are setup properly. You may have more than
one device configured to assign DHCP/IP addressing, or you may have none
configured. You'll need to run through your router, network setup, and
firewall setings completely.
You'll also need to check IE's settings as well.

MEB Thx for the suggestions.
I will have my friend who is much more tech savy than me look at those
settings tmrw.
Individually, tried to load AVAST antipsyware and then after that Search
and Destroy both to no avail. They both seemed to freeze , crash whatever I
want to call it. Is expecting a 1999 IBM Think PAD 1450 i 299 MHX with
256 mgs of ram to run WIN 98 and a printer installed, a AVG antirus , IE
6.o , Ccleaner and then expect to be able to add an antyspyware to it
being unrealistic. Also the attempt at installing a WIFI card which is so far
unsuccessful. This particular computer crashed horribly after running XP
Pro, the same printer, Zone alarm Internet security suiten and a 10/100

It then took a while to get it restored back to the original IBM think Pad
laptop state. When I run the PC doctor test on it all the componenets check
out fine.
Is it possisble that it has seen its day ?? I am cluless to the life
expectancy of laptops and puters in general . The only actual repairs I have
done are to hae the backlight replaced and upgradeing the RAM to 256 .
All thoughts would be appreciated

What is the exact DHCP error you are getting, word for word in its entirety, and
exactly when in the startup process are you getting it?

This does not sound like a problem with the card itself, necessarily, but with some
configuration, as I think MEB mentioned.

There is no Avast Anti-spyware. Avast is an anti-virus, and you stated earlier that
you have AVG anti-virus installed. What is the exact link where you found and
downloaded what you are calling Avast Anti-spyware?

I have a 333MHz AMD K6-2 with 128MB RAM, from 1998, and it runs Win98SE with an
Epson printer, a Visioneer scanner, Avast anti-virus, IE6, Opera, and Firefox; it
runs fine, so I doubt those apps are the cause if the problems.

Start off with a clean boot and see how that affects your stability:

Ah wait a minute, you already have ANTI-V installed with AVG, trying to
install AVAST won't work. Since AVG is already installed, nix AVAST. I see
Glen already caught that [good thing I held this in Drafts ...]

SpyBot S&D should have installed easily. It's a *use when needed*
application, and makes modifications to the registry to dis-allow certain
sites and ActiveX/Java activities, cookies, and a few other things when you
IMMUNIZE the system [which you should do everytime you update the defs]..

Yeah, its slow for XP if its only 300mhz, and short on memory. ZA Suite is
a memory hungry program and so is XP.

Not really. It should continue just fine with 98, though you will have to
be careful to get devices that support 98 [not requiring 98SE], or run a
generic driver [if applicable AND available]. Of course its going to be slow
with 98, but compared to the setup running XP, it will seem fast.

As was originally advised by Bob, 98 is not very supportive of many
cards/devices used for Internet connection. HOWEVER, if you actually got
the drivers for the card to install, and its showing up properly in Device
Manager and Networking, then you may have a chance.

Returning to your original comment from IBM, ah, if you had a full version
of SE, you can force it to upgrade 98 using some switches in the command
line.... IBM isn't still supplying support for the notebook is it?

Again, if the device is showing up properly in Device Manager AND in
Networking, then we need a posting from winipcfg output AND what is showing
in the Networking tabs {TCP/IP settings - DNS, IP, Gateway, WINS} for the
device.
To use winipcfg : Start > RUN > winipcfg - press enter > Press More Info >
find the device and post what it shows for:
Ethernet Adapter Information.

Re: 98 SE UPGRADE

I am quite certain that I got the DHCP error when I installed I.E. V6.0.
I have purchased a Level One # FPC-0106TX 32 BIT 100 mbs pcmcia THAT THE
SALESMAN TOLD ME WOULD WORK ON WIN 98 ORIGINAL edition , although the box
says 98SE/2000/me/xp and tried installing it to no avail. I can return it. It
is not listed in the known devices in windows installation wizard and it
requests that I install from a floppy although it came with driver on a CD. I
tried to install it thru browseing but got 2 device drivers installed , that
shows in Device manager with a yellow slash thru them . It reads existing
Ndis2 driver and also Existing ODI driver .

And then it asks me to Put in the floppy for a Novell xxxx no clue? Both of
these have the yellow error icon attached to them . I have removed them both
and am back to the LINKSY PCMPIA C 100 with the frayed wire, working at least
..

Does anyone know how to fool this IBM into loading WIN SE ( Full Edition
) . I have tried to fool it 2x and get an IBM errror that says the upgrade
version must be used.That would be the best solution. If I were in the USA
there are Upgrade editions available on EBAY. Here in Greece I do not have
many options.

Does anyone think it is worthwhile to uninstall and reinstall I.E.6 to
see exactly what error message I get ?

P.S. I now remember that I installed the AVST to the partitioned D drive
and did not click on the exe file to run it , so it is inaccurate to say it
would not install the AVAST Antivirus. MY BAD . 4 days of fighting with
this Laptop has made me punchy.

Re: 98 SE UPGRADE

Well some very good news. While researching and attempting to UPGRADE
to 98 SE I wetn to Level Ones site and say that they said the PCMCIA ethernet
card was 98 FE compatible.

So i tried again and Voila it installed this time although it did not
recognize the card but saw it as a generic device . I have AVg antivirus and
wonder what would be a good antispyware. I am on a router so I do not need a
firewall as Glen pointed out.

Does it seem worthwhile to continue to try to upgrade to SE? For the
moment, I onky need it to to install this WIFI card. Is there any
significant other reason in your opinions to pursue the UPGRADE.

Should be OK as long as it's working. I was busy last night and could not
reply....I was going to suggest starting over by cleaning out all the network
devices and reinstalling the NIC.

There are not a lot of anti-spyware apps to choose from that work with Win98 or
98SE. What I generally use are Ad-Aware, Spybot Search and Destroy, SpywareBlaster;
and for trojans,Trend Micro's SysClean (second item on this page):

A good program that is not free is Sunbelt Software's CounterSpy v.1.5:

I would, but it depends on what you plan to use this system for, and what your
hardware is. Mainly, 98SE has much better support for USB devices, and in most
cases is needed for successful support of USB 2.0. 98SE has better driver support
in general, with changes in the device driver model. A main feature in 98SE that was
not available in 98 is Internet Connection Sharing (ICS).

Re: 98 SE UPGRADE

Hi Guys,
I have been tooling around with this IBM and it has been working fairly
well. I installed SE and then had a problem so used the recovery CD and I am
back to square one win 98 wise.
I tried installing lavasoft antipyware but it does not open properly, just
like the Avast would download but not install . I had some type of MSIEXEC
error , but I have done so much stuff , I do not know where to find it.
I beleive this stops programs from installing properly.

I have found info on MSiexec errors for WIN XP but not for 98. Any thoughts?

If you are trying to install Ad-Aware 2007, that's probably your problem. It does
not install on Win98/98SE/ME.

Among its system requirements is one of the following operating systems: Windows
2000 (Pro and Server), Windows Server 2003 (32-bit), Windows XP (Home and Pro,
32-bit), Windows Vista (32-bit).

For Win9x, you must use the older Ad-Aware SE:

Re: 98 SE UPGRADE

Thx Glen,
I will try to download that as soon as my wife finishes with the IBM.
I was able to succesfully download the search and destroy but when I click
on it to open, it makes a grinding sound as though it is trying to read the
floppy drive. Then I tried upgrade and got 4 SUM something errors so I
remover Spybot search and destroy for the second time. I will post back what
happens with the older Adaware version .

Thanks Glen ,
I downloaded older version from file.hippo. I ran it and selected
Thorough scan and got a blue screen during the scan. Could I have overtaxed
or overheated the laptop?

I reran it with the normal settings and it seemed OK. It is either the
ADaware scan , or the addition of a wired PS2/USB Mouse that caused the Blue
screen

Since this puter crashed running XP with the same mouse , I am worried
about leaving it connected. Could it be the cause of the Blue screen or is
the antispyware scan more likely ?

What did the blue screen say, exactly? The complete error on the screen might give
a clue to the cause.

I'd remove the mouse first, and use the built-in trackball or whatever is on that
laptop, and try another full scan to see if you still get the error without the
mouse.

I ran it 2x via normal scan, with the mouse removed and it had no
problems. I think it may have overheated or the mouse was the problem. In any
event I will use it with the built in IBM pointer
