What is with the all upper case lettering?
I cannot think of any well-read and widespread publication (digital or
otherwise) that uses all upper case lettering throughout. That is likely
because it is more difficult to read/comprehend for most people and for some
it is like a loud announcement/screaming.
Beyond that - what do you mean?
You can download and save all updates for later use - including service
packs. You can even integrate those patches into your Windows XP
installation CD - so if you had to reinstall - you would end up almost
fully-patched right from the beginning.
You can download each update manually - based off the KB Article number,
etc. That way you can back it up/burn a CD of them in case you need them or
use them to keep a slipstream/integrated (updated) Windows XP CD.
How to use the Windows Update Catalog http://support.microsoft.com/kb/323166
(In order to use the Windows Update Catalog, you must use IE to get the
patches..)
At the end of this line you see "ms##-***.mspx" .. If you simply replace ##
with the two-digit year and the *** with the three character month
abbreviation, you will see the list of "critical" and "important" patches
for that month (since it only happens once a month usually, if you check by
the second Tuesday (wait until afternoon) of each month - you should be
fine) - note that future months will not work.
You should be more understanding of people whom may have their caps lock
activated and do not work in a corporate enviroment that prohibits uppercase
usuage-HATEFUL! This may be an elder person too. And why are you going
through all that mess when it would be simple to ask her to use the computor
to do it by clicking on the start menu and selecting windows updates and
following the prompts given once it links her to the website???? Try to
understand that older generations are using the web too, how about it!

What you say makes no sense.
My pointing out that the usage of all uppercase lettering is difficult to
read has *nothing* to do with whether or not you are in a private or
corporate environment. It has nothing to do with whether you are young or
old. It has nothing to do with 'hate'. As I pointed out - I know of no
widespread publication out there (digital or not) that prints everything in
all uppercase lettering because it is difficult to read/might convey the
wrong message. You don't get magazines that have all upper case lettering,
newspapers don't do ALL uppercase lettering, even closed captioning on TV
does not do all uppercase lettering.
I point it out so that perhaps the next time, the same mistake might not be
made and the original poster might get more responses. As it is - she has
gotten my response - and I suppose - your response... Which makes the
assumption (since she asked about express and manual updates, it seems a
poor assumption) that she does not know about the website and how to get to
it. And why do you go through the stare menu? It isn't always there -
easily deleted. Internet Explorer open, (file, edit, view...) Tools -->
Windows Update.
For some reason you seem to believe that 'older generations' are incapable
of learning. You also have an idea that an 'elder person' would take
offense to being given information on the topic they asked about and/or
having a mistake pointed out to them.
To me - your assumptions about anyone older than you (which - judging by
your attitude, wording, general post structure, etc - is fairly young) might
consider a correction in a new environment, a full answer to a question
posed or just advice given when asked for as hateful or that they might be
unable to understand it because they are older - offensive and
simple-minded...
Of course - those are just my opinions based off this post and your
reactions/comments/judgements... Subject to correction over time.
to visit the site manually in WinXP -
Click the Start button, select All Programs, and then select Windows Update
or in Internet Explorer
Tools Menu - Windows Update.
