XML Validation fails with unicode characters.

Hi All,
<br/>

I have a xml file containing some japanese chaarcters. So i tried to use shift-jis encoding shown below.<br/>

<span><?xml version="1.0" encoding="shift_jis"?>
But am getting error as
., hexadecimal value 0x00, is an invalid character. Line 2, position 1.

Could anyone please shed some lights.
