I am running vista on my pc. I have been trying to add a plugin to my adobe
plugin folder. (cut and paste) It keeps telling me i ned permission, but does
not tell me how to get it. Ihave searched all the help files and have found
nothing. I am the admin of this computer so I should have permission?

Take ownership of the folder. Right-click it, then Properties > Security
tab > Advanced > Owner tab.

No. Should be no need to go to that length at all. You get this dialog right?

Just click Continue. You will get a User Account Control (UAC) elevation
prompt. Click OK there to permit the file copy and it will complete normally.

RE: adding file to program folder in Vista

To modify (copy, delete, rename) files or folders you can take Ownership of
(in your Username) and grant yourself Full Control permissions of the files
or folders in question described in the following tutorial. I recommend
doing this for large branches in your directory, like doing this for the
Program Files folder and all folders and files under it so you have Full
Control of all your programs.

Another way to gain access to modify files and folders includes going to the
Start button, typing in Windows Explorer, right-clicking on this and
selecting Run As Administrator. You should then have "elevated privileges"
to do whatever you wish to files in Windows Explorer. There is also a
program called Unlocker that you can use to gain access to modify files and
folders (see link below).

RE: adding file to program folder in Vista

You can't elevate Windows Explorer.

Golly. When I right-click explorer.exe "Run as administrator" is one of the
choices and gets the normal UAC prompt. In what way is this not elevating
Windows Explorer?

Re: adding file to program folder in Vista

It is not elevating Explorer in that it is not replacing the process token.
It goes through all the motions, with all the prompts, but you can only have
one instance of explorer.exe per session, and since the one you already have
is running with a normal token you can't elevated it.

You can either verify this with Process Explorer or read the book, where it
is all explained.
