CD Player has no sound.

I'm just curious why the Windows CD Player does not play sound for me. Even
after a fresh install, it doesn't. WMP has sound! What's the big deal with
CD Player?

I've disabled audio from the BIOS to let a new sound card work properly. It
seems to me that this might have been the cause, but I may be wrong. I've
also got a Creative CD Player that came with the sound card, and even it
doesn't play sound!

Windows Media Player (WMP) has sound *when playing an audio CD*, but CD Player does
not....is that what you are stating?

Correct. WMP plays CD's inserted in the computer's CD ROM drive as well as
local hard drive media files. However, the Windows CD Player does not play
sound when an audio CD is placed in the CD ROM drive. It plays (because I
can see it's counting the time on the current track) but no sound is heard at
all. I do have WMP as my default player for playing CD's (amung many other
local media formats), but I've even tried setting the Windows CD player as
the default for audio CD's...still nothing!

Oh, I should mention that WMP is NOT open when Windows CD Player is trying to
play the CD. So there should be no conflict.

AFAIK WMP read the sound digitally, through the IDE bus, and directs it
to the soundcard. CD Player just gives the drive the command to play, and
the sound is directed to an analog cable between the drive and the
soundcard.
In your case the cable lacks, or you have muted the analog CD input.

That's what I was thinking also, that WMP is using digital playback, and CDPlayer
uses analog, requiring an analog cable from the CD drive to the sound card.

Going by what Ingeborg & glee have said, ensure all the individual
volume settings are not muted at...

"R-Clk Speaker Icon in Tray, Open Volume Controls"

Use its Options menu to ensure the various controls are all showing,
especially "CD Audio". Or, borrow Richards's headphones after he is done
listening to Yellow Submarine.
