Hi

I was watching a .divx movie, and I restarted the system, when the movie was
over. I got an error during bootup as 'The RPC Servier is Unavailable'. The
Start Menu has started to look like a Classic Menu, a lot of functions are
disabled, I get kernel error many times, cant play Media Player, cant open
Internet Explorer cant run system restore in safe mode either, ... . I am
sure there is no virus on it!

This happened all of a sudden after restart, and how do get my x64 back to
normal?

I have vista on another partition, and it is running fine.

Hi,
You might start checking this KB
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555839/en-us
or these other options found inside Microsoft with the search utility:

RE: System Gone Crazy - Pro x64 - The RPC Server is Unavailable

Hi
thanks for your reply.

The error message 'The RPC Servier is Unavailable' is only a part of the
problem. In fact there is no software on XP that is working properly! Most of
the software do not even open up!

I get loads of errors!

I scanned the partition with several anti-virus softwares, and no virus is
found!

Looking forward to your reply.

Hemanth:
If your OS is Windows XP x64 I would boot off the install CD and do a repair
install.

RE: System Gone Crazy - Pro x64 - The RPC Server is Unavailable

I tried to boot off the install CD, and do a Repair Install.
But it would just let me to go to the Windows directory in DOS prompt.
(D:/Windows).
How do I repair now?
thanks

Re: System Gone Crazy - Pro x64 - The RPC Server is Unavailable

Hi, Hemanth.

> But it would just let me to go to the Windows directory in DOS prompt.

That doesn't sound right. You haven't told us anything about your computer
yet. What make and model? Was WinXP pre-installed on it? Or did you build
it yourself? What motherboard/chipset/CPU? Where did you get the "install
CD"?

HOW are you trying to do the repair install? It sounds like you are booting
from the CD and then choosing "R" for Repair the first time it is offered.
To do a "repair install", also known as an "in-place upgrade", you need to
press Enter at this prompt and continue to the Install dialogue, accept the
EULA, then press "R" at the later prompt. (It's been over a year since I
last did this, so my memory is fuzzy, but that's the key idea.)

For details, see Microsoft's official instructions:
How to perform an in-place upgrade (reinstallation) of Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;en-us;q315341

Or you might prefer MVP Michael Stevens' version of the same instructions:
How to Perform a Windows XP Repair Install
http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

This will take about as long as a clean install, because it will replace all
the operating system files - but leave your applications and data (and most
of your tweaks) intact. But then you will need to visit Windows Update to
get all the fixes since the date your install CD was produced. Better set
aside half a day for the whole project.

I usually suggest trying SFC /scannow first, before resorting to the
in-place upgrade. SFC compares each OS file to the "known good" copy kept
in a folder on your hard drive and replaces any missing or damaged ones.
Have your CD handy; SFC might need to see that. It takes a while, but much
less than doing a repair install.

Re: System Gone Crazy - Pro x64 - The RPC Server is Unavailable

Hi

I did the 'in-place upgrade', and it worked! But I am unable to install
Service Pack 2, which tries to extract the components for a while (10 mins),
and then shows an error, and uninstalls itself!

could you figure out why SP2 is not being installed?

thanks

Re: System Gone Crazy - Pro x64 - The RPC Server is Unavailable

Hemanth,
It might happen that the downloaded SP2 file has errors.
Try downloading it again from:
http://download.microsoft.com/downl...Server2003.WindowsXP-KB914961-SP2-x64-ENU.exe
Using some download manager program like Flashget usually ensures an error
free download.
Also extract the sp2 files by yourself by using WinRAR (it is shareware).
Right click on the downloaded exe, WinRAR, Extract to...
and run "update.exe" from the "amd64\update" subfolder.
Best of luck.

Re: System Gone Crazy - Pro x64 - The RPC Server is Unavailable

But XP x64 is based on XP Server 2003 so, many issues can be extrapolated
from one OS to the other.
Hope you get your system fixed.
