Hello, I first ran into the link to this MS KB article at this forum:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/929777

What it describes is that if you have more than 3 gigs of ram installed in
your system, the Vista install will encounter a stop error.

At first, I thought this was only limited to the 32-bit Vista, but the KB
article has also included a 64-bit version for the hot fix. So does this
mean that the 64-bit Vista is also affected?

I have 4 gigs of ram in my setup. I have to pull two gigs of ram out of the
system before I install the 64-bit Vista, for otherwise, I will *for sure*
encounter this dreadful stop error?

I am about to install Vista 64 bit on my setup. I just want a smooth
experience.

Many thanks in advance for your info!

RE: 4 gigs of ram and 64-bit Vista Install

Hi,
The same kb provides a workaround at the bottom of the page, and I quote:
"To work around this problem, use either of the following methods:
• Restart the computer. Then, try to install again.
• Remove 2 GB of RAM, and then restart the installation process. After
Windows Vista is installed, reinstall the RAM."
You should be good to go with that.

Re: 4 gigs of ram and 64-bit Vista Install

This also doesn't mean that you will hit the problem for sure. I installed
Vista Ultimate 64-bit with 4 gig installed and didn't run into the problem.

Problems I did run into. Games crashing because of Audio drivers and having
4 gig of ram.. Then after taking 2 gig out to test if that worked, Vista
told me my system had changed and went into limited use mode and I had to
reactivate.. heh. Otherwise I've had very little in the way of problems
with Vista.

RE: 4 gigs of ram and 64-bit Vista Install

I saw that workaround at the bottom of the page. It is just the hassle of
having to pull 2 gigs of ram out of the setup and then putting them back
after the OS has been installed that kind of bothers me.

That is why I asked. I just wanted to know if for sure if this problem
would occur if I have 4 gigs of ram in my setup.

Thanks for the info, though.

Re: 4 gigs of ram and 64-bit Vista Install

no, not for sure. Some have, some haven't. I don't know what the specific
cause is, so I can't predict whether you'll hit it.

Re: 4 gigs of ram and 64-bit Vista Install

And if Vista gives him no problems, then maybe the Soundblaster cards will do
it.
I have read in CreativeLabs forums of people complaining about BSOD's and
things as the like with 4 gigs of RAM.
They have released a new driver yesterday for their top of the line cards so
they may have corrected the issue.
I am running an "old" SB 24bit with "a mere" 2 gigs.
I have not dared yet to cross the 3 gigs "event horizon" and see what's in
the other side.

Re: 4 gigs of ram and 64-bit Vista Install

I have the Creative X Fi ExtremeGamer sound card and have also downloaded
their latest driver(released yesterday, Nov 5, 2007) for Vista 64 bit.

So let's hope that they have fixed the problem--provided this is a problem
on the part of Creative!

A quick rundown of my core specs:

E6550@3.15Ghz(7x450Mhz)
Asus P5K E WiFi AP
Crucial Ballistix PC6400 4x1GB
Creative X Fi ExtremeGamer
Happauge HVR1600 TV Tuner
EVGA 8800GTS 640MB
Matrix Raid w/ 2x250GB Seagate Barracuda single platter SATA II HD's

Many thanks again for all the info!

Re: 4 gigs of ram and 64-bit Vista Install

You might also want to check the Vista forums (no need to register) in
www.soundblaster.com
There you will find lots of useful posts and workarounds.
