DOS window problem

Recently when I end some programs running in a DOS window, the window
size reduces to slightly larger than a postage stamp.

I have been running these programs for years without that happening.

I can't find any setting that would correct this.

Has anybody encountered this problem?

Well, let us look at the Properties of your Windows DOS box...

"START button, Programs, MS-DOS prompt".
Don't click it. R-Clk it & select Properties. Here are my settings.

(1) General tab:
Size is 1474 bytes.
Attributes: Only Archive is checked.
(2) Program tab:
Name: MS-DOS Prompt
Cmd line: C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND.COM
Working: Blank
Batch file: Doskey
Shortcut Key: None
Run: Normal window
Close on exit: Checked
Advanced button: Only "Suggest MS-DOS mode as necessary" is
checked.
(3) Font tab:
"Both font types" is bolted.
Font size: Auto
(4) Memory tab:
Everything is Auto; everything else is checked.
Details button: Complains about "NoEMS".
(5) Screen tab:
Window is bolted.
Initial size is 50 lines.
Everything else is checked.
(6) Miscellaneous tab:
QuickEdit, Exclusive mode, & Always suspend are unchecked.
Everything else is checked.
Idle sensitivity slider is in the middle.

If that is all well, then we must check the Properties of both your
Command.com files...

COMMAND.COM
Type: MS-DOS Application
Location: C:\WINDOWS
& C:\
Size: 93,890 bytes
Created: Friday, April 23, 1999 10:22:00 PM
& (unknown)
Modified: Friday, April 23, 1999 10:22:00 PM

....the one in C:\ is "Created: Unknown". However, I'm not worried,
because many system files are like that.

In various threads here, wise ones have said to keep both. The important
thing is that both have the same Size & Mod date. If one does not, then
it could be a virus, & an investigation must begin.

I don't believe I've ever seen it happen, but I rarely do run DOS
programs.

The only difference that I could find (on 3 machines) is the size of
COMMAND.COM. On my machines they are all 967 bytes. It
looks to me that you probably have installed something that added
a little "goodie" to yours (possibly Microsoft).

No, mine is the true & original size! It is in TWO of my Win98SE
..cabs...!...

I'm thinking you must be looking at a .pif, which may well vary in size.
My own Command.pif is 1,345 bytes.

Let's back up a minute. Your first response suggested that I check
the "START button, Programs, MS-DOS prompt" settings. Your General
Tab settings are shown above. That's what I was referring to when I
mentioned Command.com size.

My Command.com file size is the same as yours (both in c:\ and in
C:\windows.

Check the Fonts setting in the Properties for the MS-DOS Prompt.

If it is set to Auto, choose a particular setting and Apply it. The
preview pane will show you the size of the window relative to a full
screen.

I recently had an experience where, after starting in safe mode, one
of my PIFs reverted to a font size that was different to its normal
size. The setting was still at Auto, and none of my other PIFs seemed
to have been affected. So, to answer your question, I'm wondering the
same thing as well. :-)

I see. That is a .pif-- a shortcut to a DOS program. It is normal for
them to vary in size.

Very good. If Command.com, itself, had a different size in the same OS--
an investigation would be in order! OK, then.

I see Zabcar has confirmed this may well be a font size problem in a
..pif Font tab. Maybe, check that size in all your .pif's...

"START button, Find, F/F, *.pif" <<That's asterisk-dot-pif.

WARNING: Don't click these .pif's, unless you are sure of what they
will do!
Do you see one that could be responsible for this?

Uhm, did you try resetting the size when the box is open, using the drop
down box on the menu/title bar to increase font size. OR using the
Properties Button and setting font and screen size and whatever else you
need.
Perhaps you, at one time, reduced the opened sizes and that is now the
default. Try the full screen and/or larger TT font size.

It might also be due to the programs you are running or their individual
pifs if you're using them.
