No Desktop icon and start menu
i am using win 98

When I boot the computer, it brings me to user profile page that displays
correctly. When I chose a profile loads and the screen is blank other than
the desktop wallpaper. No Task bar, start button, icons, nothing but
wallpaper. The only way to access the system is through control-alt-delete
and choose "new task". From new task I can access all programs, even can
choose desktop and it shows the desktop icons that you can open.

Does anyone have a cure??????????????????

Here are 79 articles dealing with User Profiles at the MSKB (Microsoft
Knowledge Base), which appears to be under maintenance at the moment...

http://support.microsoft.com/search...20&ast=1&ast=2&ast=3&ast=8&ast=9&mode=a&adv=1

....Therfore, I cannot go myself right now & read through them for your
cure.

But I never heard of or saw a "new task" button where you say you saw
it. Are you sure you don't mean "end task"? If so, what was the name of
the task you ended?

If you are on the machine that exhibits the below problem i
apologize. ( ¿User Profiles?, ¿Used in a corporate environment? )

'Natalie John', under WinNT, ms has settings ( for corporate
administrators and malware to use ) to lock users out of their
desktop .. Unless you get an answer here repost in, for example,
'microsoft.public.windowsxp.general' where this problem is a
semi-FAQ. I haven't needed trying to solve this myself yet, so i
haven't paid close enough attention.
One example i just found suggested using 'System Restore', but
perhaps there is a better solution.
Next one i find point's to download and merge:
<http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/nodesktop.reg>
into your registry (if one can get things to the machine from the
internet). That is a long series of settings so i will not quote
it here.

PCR, 'Natalie John' clams to be using Win98xE but, C-A-D under
WinXP brings up '[Windows ]Task[]Manager' containing a [New
Task...] button under the 'Applications' tab. Putting 'desktop'
there brings up '%UserProfile%\Desktop\'. ... i don't think this
one's for you.

I see. And that explains the purpling of my fingertips, TOO-- IF this an

If the behavior was caused by malware and if that is still
active, i can speculate that after putting things right with the
registry file from Kelly's Corner, that it will soon be
re-overwritten with bad values by the malware again. ( Running
your Anti-Malware software in 'Safe Mode' may help if the malware
is recognized. )

Not other solutions then what i wrote before .. that you [most
probably] will get better advice posting to a group for the
Operating System you are running. If WinXP, then
'microsoft.public.windowsxp.general'.

You don't state your Operating System this time. If you in fact
are running Win98FE or Win98SE and somehow have it modified so
that pressing 'C-A-D' launches a WinNT-like 'Task Manager', and
since i hypothesized that you weren't, you probably need to state
that [again!] to see if someone else in here can help you.
