Need to Activate TS?

Hi all,

I was just wondering, what is the point of activating your TS...It
seems you do'nt have any licencing issues at all if you don't activate
it....so are you missing on any features? or is it legal with
microsoft to run a TS and not have it activated?

At the moment I'm testing this theory and have found no downfalls...
Anyone with the same experience? or anyones knownledge on the matter
would be greatly appreciated...

Q. I installed a terminal server a little while ago and it works
fine. Do I really need a licensing server?

A. Yes. Terminal Server is working now for you because it is in the
grace period. For the first 120 days after installation with
Windows Server 2003, or 90 days after installation with Windows
2000), any unlicensed client can connect while the terminal server
waits for you to install a licensing server. After the end of the
grace period, if no licensing server is found, the terminal server
will stop accepting unlicensed connections.


And no, strictly speaking it's not legal to run for any length of
time without proper licensing. The grace period is there to give
you some slack to purchase and install TS CALs.

1st of all..thank you for your reply Vera....

Ok, I understand the grace period, but technically that doesn't start
unless you activate your TS yes? I am getting no messages saying days
left, or temporary licenses, only that my TS is not activated....how
long can this go on for? and yes I realise this isn't techinally
legal, but i'm just wondering what my grace period is in this instance
before I'm forced in a rush becuase my days have run out....

So really, licences are only there for legality and honor as you can
run a TS without them....???....

The grace period starts from the that moment when you installed and used the
terminal server. As soon as you use a license server and activate your TS
the grace period stops immediately. So, you better go and get your TS CALs.

Ok, i've been absent a couple of days..now I come back and read these
replies....you's think I am ignoring Vera's comment? look at the first
line - "Thank you Vera"....

Now if you please read this, I UNDERSTAND that you have a grace
period, I UNDERSTAND how many days that is and what happens once that
period is over..I UNDERSTAND it is mandatory to buy licences....but
all of this is not what my topic was....

My question is - what functions does activating a TS actually have? Is
the only reason to activate a TS for licencing?

And Cary, you may not have been trying to be a pig..but you sure did
come across as one...Open Source is not an option...to purchase
licences once again is not a problem....

In depth answers are great...but when they stray from the question or
problem......

AFAIK, the only thing you can activate is the TS Licensing Server.
You don't activate a Terminal Server, you just install it.
If you happen to install the Licensing server on the same physical
server as the TS (but that is not a requirement), then you still
only activate the Licensing Server.
