Printer redirection for an Epson RX500 under Windows 2000 TS

Hi all,

I'm trying to figure out how to add support on a Windows 2000 TS server for
a remote PC with an Epson RX500 printer attached.

I have tried using the Printer redirection Wizard to redirect the Printer to
either generic Windows drivers such as the "Epson Stylus Photo ESC/P 2" or
"Epson RX-80", but both seem to terminate the VPN session and send junk to
the printer.

The downloaded Epson RX500 printer driver from Epson can be extracted but
the driver does not appear in the Printer Redirect Wizard, or I receive an
error like "specified print monitor is unknown". I believe this is a
monolithic driver, as the UNIDRV.DLL or PSCRIPT5.DLL do not appear in the
driver properties if the driver is installed on the server (using the Add
Printer, then selecting the extracted INF file).

I know it is not recommended to run the setup program to install these
monolithic driver on the server, but I'm not sure if I have much choice.

Has anyone attempted successful to attach a similar printer and if so, what
driver can be used?

What I have learned about Terminal Services is you can't use a USB
connected printer.

Get a LPT printer that connects via a parralel port & cable. That
pretty much means used or someones junk pile.

It's not about the printer driver, it's about TS being relatively low
tech and not supporting USB. Citrix is a very expensive alternative
to the 'free' TS. Much cheaper to find an old printer.

I don't belive this is the case. We have other USB printers that can print,
I'm just struggleing to find a generic driver to work for this printer.

You're absolutely right, Chris, USB printers have been supported
since W2K TS.
Can't help you with the driver issue, though. Have you considered a
3rd party "driver-free" solution? Might be your only option.

Thanks Vera,

I believe that this was mentioned elsewhere but I do not have experience of
these. Are they suitable (i.e. cheap) for very small installations. This
system only supports a handful of users and we only have an issue with this
one.

Chris,

I will jump in for a moment....

Third-party solutions are pretty expensive - starting at $1000 or so. Now,
that might seem like a lot of dinero, but think about it.

If you are a consultant and you spend 10 hours on this (not an uncommon
thing...) and you charge $100/hr then you just saved your client 10 hours of
your time (and yourself as well) -AND- the time that it took you to spend
those 10 hours. Plus, you will pretty much not have to worry about printer
issues again.

Two quick questions for you:

1) have you looked at the "ntprintsubs.inf" solution? It kinda sounds like
you have done something similar (the Printer Redirector Wizard)

2) have you considered upgrading to WIN2003 SP1+? You can use the "Fallback
Driver". I use this and have really good luck with it.

Cheers Cary,

I was looking at some of the UPD drivers that only cost around $100 per
concurrent user. In this case this will be ideal as the TS server only
supports a handful of users with maybe only 1 or 2 connecting concurently.

Were using Windows 2000 simply as we have the licence and is not worth
spending the extra money on upgrading, however, point noted and this may wel
be considered in the future (or even Win 2008 with built in UPD).
