I had a "serious" system crash occur a few days ago that only now is showing
up as having caused lasting, "serious" problems.
I need to do a System Restore from about a week ago.
However, "Software Distribution Service 3.0" shows up in the System Restore
history list, dated yesterday.
Web searches I've done indicate that this can pose a problem because there's
no way to uninstall it and XP tends to complain if you try to do a System
Restore from a prior date (the reasoning being MS doesn't want you
uninstalling this, period).
I don't care if this service is on my system or not -- I tend to allow all
XP updates automatically -- but I DO care about getting my system back to
proper functioning!
What can I do to get a clean, reliable, smooth System Restore from a prior
date?
Should I ignore the posts I've seen on the web and go for it and hope for
the best?
If so, I assume I should first uninstall the two programs that appear in the
System Restore history list that have dates that are subsequent to the date I
want to restore from, correct?
And if that is the cleanest way to proceed, then what do I do about the fact
that I can't uninstall the Software Distribution Service first? (This is of
course on the hope that it will even let me do a restore from old date in the
first place -- I'm quite concerned about the web posts I've seen that say it
probably will not let me at all.)
Thanks!
